Newmarket Tips: 1000 Guineas Runner-By-Runner Guide (2025)
The 1,000 Guineas Stakes is a Group One Flat race open to three-year-old fillies.
It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of one mile, and it is scheduled to take place on May 4th 2025 at 3.35pm GMT – some 24 hours after the 2000 Guineas.
The 1,000 Guineas can act as a trial for the Oaks, with the last horse to win both races being Love in 2020.
Runner-By-Runner Guide To The 1000 Guineas:
Chantilly Lace
Ralph Beckett’s Lope De Vega filly has raced only once to date, winning a heavy ground Salisbury affair, beating subsequent winner Char in the process.
Conditions will be completely different on Sunday, but she’s well bred and it would come as no surprise if she was involved in the finish.
Desert Flower
This unbeaten filly is probably the one they all have to beat based on her juvenile form. She registered four impressive victories in her two-year-old campaign, including the all-important Fillies’ Mile over course and distance.
She certainly sets the standard today, and a high one at that.
Duty First
First and foremost, Duty First has plenty of raw speed and did pretty well as a juvenile, placing second in a Goodwood’s William Hill Prestige Fillies’ Stakes, before finishing third in the Rockfel Stakes at this very venue.
Her surprise victory at 33/1 in the horse racing betting odds in this season’s Fred Darling was by no means a fluke and she could be absolutely anything.
Elwateen
The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Dubawi-filly finished strongly to beat Orchid over seven furlongs at Kempton last August, and the step up to a mile should suit her down to a tee.
She’s yet another possible candidate with untapped ability, who may well come into the equation.
Flight
Consistent filly who enjoyed her fair share of success last season, including placing behind Desert Flower at Doncaster and also behind Merrily in the Oh So Sharp Stakes.
She’ll probably need others to underperform here, but she’s earned her place in the lineup.
Hey Boo
After bringing up a double at Chelmsford as a three-year-old, Jack Channon’s filly finished the three-and-a-quarter-lengths runner-up to Duty First at Newbury.
This will require yet another step up in talent to make the grade.
Lake Victoria
Classy Frankel-filly Lake Victoria landed the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes over six furlongs last season before stepping up a mile to bag the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar in November.
It’s almost impossible to see her finishing out of the frame in this Classic.
Red Letter
Red Letter was narrowly beaten by Lake Victoria on her debut last term before winning her maiden convincingly in her next race.
We last saw her finishing fourth in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, beaten only a length-and-a-half by Lake Victoria again after finding traffic in the closing stages. You would like to think that she will be in the mix once more.
Remaat
Ran third in the Nell Gwyn Stakes when staying on well having run a solo route. If she can put up a repeat performance she may be able to trouble the market leaders.
Simmering
Simmering was well-beaten on her return to action at Newbury three weeks ago and looks to have a monumental task on her hoofs to turn that form on its head.
1000 Guineas Prediction
Ten nice fillies, but only a handful with a serious chance. The vote goes to Aidan O’Brien’s LAKE VICTORIA (NAP), who is rated 2lb higher than Desert Flower, and looks sure to go on improving as the season progresses.
