Newmarket Tips: 2000 Guineas Runner-By-Runner Guide (2025)

2000 Guineas Preview and Tips

The 2000 Guineas, which was founded in 1809 and has a glittering roll of honour, celebrates its 217th running in 2025 and has a total prize fund of £525,000.

Along with the 1000 Guineas, also over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the 2000 Guineas is one of the five British Classics, all restricted to three-year-olds – the others being the Derby and the Oaks, both over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in early June, and the extended 14-furlong St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster in September.

Runner-By-Runner Guide To The 2000 Guineas:

Benevento

Wootton Bassett-colt who could easily outrun his odds. His 4¼ lengths fourth to Field  Of Gold in the Craven was applaudable.

Expanded

Struck gold first time out at the Curragh before finishing a close second to Shadow Of Light in the Dewhurst. Leading chance.

Field Of Gold

Won the Craven Stakes over the Classic course and distance last month, with his three-and-a-half-length victory making him the understandable favourite here.

Green Impact

Scored twice at Leopardstown last season, including a length-and-a-half defeat of Delacroix in the Group Two Champions Juvenile Stakes. Each-way player.

Ruling Court

He already has a Guineas victory to his name in 2025, having landed the UAE version at Meydan by a commanding five lengths at the start of March.

Scorthy Champ

Proved himself to be a high-class two-year-old in his three starts last season. He should benefit from this step up to a mile.

Seagulls Eleven

Outpaced and beaten 7¼ lengths by Henri Matisse in the USA. This is another tall order.

Shadow Of Light

Had an amazing juvenile campaign which saw him land the 6f Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes and the Darley Dewhurst Stakes over a furlong further.

Tornado Alert

The 66-1 shot was successful over the straight mile in a Newcastle maiden in October and faces an uphill task.

Wimbledon Hawkeye

Wimbledon Hawkeye landed the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at two and returned to the track with a solid effort when second to Field Of Gold. He should be involved in the finish.

Yah Mo Be There

Touted as a “lively outsider for the Guineas” by owner Phil Cunningham after the two-year-old’s brief but promising juvenile campaign. However, his Greenham Stakes fifth was pretty disappointing and he will need a quick turnaround in fortune.

2000 Guineas Prediction

No horse over horse racing odds of 16/1 has won this race for eleven years now, so it’s probably against the laws of probability that an outsider will figure this year.

Charlie Appleby’s SHADOW OF LIGHT (NAP) really was a revelation as a juvenile and the booking of ace French jockey Mickael Barzalona is a positive move by connections.
