Prince to rule again in Strensall Stakes
ZABEEL PRINCE can land his first victory for over a year in the opening Strensall Stakes (1:50pm) on the fourth and final day of York’s Ebor Festival. Although he’s had a few niggling issues, he’s very talented and was not given a hard time by his rider once his chance had gone on his comeback. Even though he was a beaten favourite, he shaped as though he retained plenty of ability and, if he moves forward as you might expect, he’s been found a realistic spot to be competitive here at 13/2.
Charlton’s Dancing looks the right Approach in Melrose
DANCING APPROACH is a sporting selection to land a warm edition of the Melrose Handicap (2:25pm) at 20/1. The Haydock handicap she won at the beginning of the season has worked out a treat, and she still ran very well at Goodwood, where the ground was too quick for her and she didn’t handle the track. I hope David Egan has the confidence to ride her prominently, as I have no doubts about her stamina for this new distance.
Voyage a Safe option in City Of York
The City Of York Stakes (3:00pm) runners are a very tightly matched group, and my feeling is that SAFE VOYAGE is the one to be with at 4/1. Had he got any sort of run in the Lennox, he’d have pushed Space Blues quite hard (as he had at Haydock) and we know from the Maurice de Gheest how good that horse now is. Any more showers would only help his chances.
Verdana Blue and Ghostwatch my plays in the Ebor
I like the look of two in the Ebor (3:40pm) – VERDANA BLUE (10/1) and GHOSTWATCH (18/1). The first-named simply did not stay at Royal Ascot but moved through the race like she was still very well handicapped on the Flat. She would not want any more rain.
As for Ghostwatch, he won the Melrose here a couple of seasons ago, so we know that course and distance are no problem for him. The track has been favouring prominent racers on the round course all week, and I would expect William Buick to have him pretty handy.
Express could take Roses Stakes for Tinkler
Although ACKLAM EXPRESS needs another step up to win the Roses Stakes (4:10pm), he could hardly have made a bigger impression at Goodwood, and the clock has told us on two occasions this season that he is highly likely to be a stakes horse. He looks a fair price at 5/1.
