Nick Luck’s William Hill blog: Boxing Day Tips 2025

William Hill ambassador Nick Luck previews ITV action from Kempton, Wetherby and Aintree on Boxing Day.

Friday, Kempton

SECRET DES DIEUX might be the answer to the opener on ITV on Boxing Day (12.45). Unlike most of these, he’s already been in quite deep over fences – acquitting himself well – and can make another move forward now he’s back up in trip. A two pound rise shouldn’t be an issue back down in class. Big chance.

WENDIGO must have very solid claims in the Kauto Star (1.20). He’s quite an unassuming horse, but his CV is now looking very solid. He might well have been a decent second in the Albert Bartlett but for a bad trip, and he’s made a fine start to his chasing career. The Newbury form is working out ok, and it’s inconceivable he won’t appreciate this extra distance.

GOLDEN ACE may well be somewhat overpriced yet again in the Christmas Hurdle (1.55). It’s obvious that Sir Gino is a rare beast, but it’s hard to launch in to a horse at odds-on off an absence created by a serious and unusual illness. Furthermore, the bare form of the Fighting Fifth actually makes pretty good reading: Golden Ace gave a hefty beating to two bang-up 150s performers, with a very slick jumping display. If there are any signs of rustiness with the favourite, she will need no second invitation.

GAELIC WARRIOR is quite a confident pick to win the King George (2.30). This is a serious edition of the race, but there can’t be many horses around who can dispatch Il Etait Temps and Grey Dawning in the manner that he has. Right handed and three miles on a track that favours free-wheeling and bold jumping is absolutely in his wheelhouse. His toughness at Punchestown was quite striking, and this might be a simple case of ‘best horse wins race.’

Friday, Wetherby

KNAPPERS HILL might be a little overpriced in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby (1.35). I adore Konfusion – and still think he’s ahead of the handicapper – but I was really struck by the selection’s comeback against serious opposition, travelling almost best of all until two out. He could just have a big class edge here.

Friday, Aintree

STARMOUNT is a bit of a speculative pick in the William Hill Formby at Aintree (1.05). Clearly Mydaddypaddy has abundant ability, but there are two or three others with plenty of potential. The selection is definitely one of those judged both on his smart point form and his ready win at Wetherby. He’s out of a really good mare, who has already produced 160+ G1 winner Stage Star, and his price definitely makes him of interest.
