Nick Luck’s William Hill blog: Derby Day Best Bets

William Hill ambassador Nick Luck previews Derby Day from Epsom and gives us his best bets for the Classic card.
Saturday, Epsom
SPIRITUAL looks quite a big price in the ITV opener on Derby Day (1.00). A talented filly when ridden up with the pace last year, she came back with a promising opening effort over seven furlongs on her comeback. Given how much she improved from her seasonal debut last year, her effectiveness with cut, and the likely suitability of this track, she rates a decent bet at the odds.
PERSICA looks the likely one in the Diomed (1.35). Impressive in the handicap on this card last year, he has performed to a higher level since, looking particularly effective with give underfoot. He can be readily excused his flop in the Lockinge on fast ground, and can atone here with conditions and track to suit.
RAJETERIAT makes a bit of appeal in the 3YO Dash (2.10). With Ruby’s Profit drawn up the stands side, it’s impossible to imagine this race developing among the low numbers. As such, the selection looks a lovely bit of each way value, likely to be ideally positioned behind the speed. In addition, he looked as though he might have progressed for his local yard on his pleasing comeback and, crucially, the hood is now left off for the big day.
THE BELL CONDUCTOR is another one at price in the Dash itself (2.45). Fifth in the race last year, he races for a new stable off a few pounds lower and will love a return to this track, and will particularly appreciate any further rainfall. The draw looks kind enough, and this is the first time he’s been non-apprentice ridden for quite a while.
NIGHTWALKER each way remains the way I’ll look to play this year’s Derby (3.30). If the forecast deluge doesn’t arrive, I’d still be inclined towards taking a positive view of RULING COURT, but am worried about the trainer’s slightly lukewarm vibes yesterday. The O’Brien trio might be quite closely matched here – all have claims, but LAMBOURN might be the value as one who’ll appreciate a thorough test and looks dead straightforward.
