Nick Luck’s William Hill blog: You Got To Me can strike St Leger Gold

| BY News Team

William Hill ambassador Nick Luck looks over Saturday’s St Leger card from Doncaster and puts up a few selections from Chester and Leopardstown too.

Doncaster, Saturday

RIGHTHERE RIGHTNOW is the pick in Saturday’s Champagne Stakes, the curtain raiser to some terrific action at Doncaster on Saturday (1.50pm). Despite being keen and green, he could hardly have been more impressive at Newmarket on his debut. The form is ok without being spectacular, but he could hardly have been more impressive and this was immediately nominated as a target, with the suggestion that easier ground would suit. A more strongly run affair will also help him to relax and there should be a good bit more to come.

ABERAMA GOLD can go well at big odds to at least get a slice of the six-places each way being offered by William Hill in the Portland (2.25pm). He’s a full stone lower than when winning in deep ground over 5 here last autumn, and the balance of his runs this year suggests he’s not really deteriorated, but that he’s been waiting for the right set-up and conditions. This ground and trip look about right, and he loves a big field handicap – he’s not been out of the three in five visits to the track.

KINROSS can have one more hurrah in the Park Stakes (3.00pm). His comeback effort looks a bit better in light of Montassib’s subsequent heroics, while the ground was too quick at Ascot and Goodwood was a tactical mess from his point of view. Now he gets more forgiving ground and a race that should be a little easier at his perfect trip.

YOU GOT TO ME can continue Ralph Beckett’s fine record with fillies in the St Leger (3.40pm). I’m an unashamed fan of this filly, who ought to have made it a brace of top-level wins in the Yorkshire Oaks, but was forced to chase down the retreating Emily Upjohn in the less favoured part of the track. Everything about her pedigree and her tough-as-teak finishing efforts suggests that this is the right spot.

Chester, Saturday

AL QAREEM gets the nod in the Stand Cup at Chester (2.05pm). He’s one paced, but he’s pretty relentless, has some strong form in soft ground, and can lead them along at a merry dance. He won this last year from none other than Bluestocking, and could well dominate this.

SHANROE looks quite a big price to take a hand in the Watergate Cup (2.40pm). He’s a fair horse on his day, and plugged on quite nicely behind much more talented horses here last time. Ground and trip are now firmly in his favour, and he swings round here very effectively.

Leopardstown, Saturday

ITV will be showing recordings of the two Group Ones at Leopardstown. The Irish Champion Stakes (3.25pm) is a cracker, and I certainly won’t be leaving GHOSTWRITER unbacked. He’ll love the ground, keeps getting better in keeping with his impressive physique, and I’d expect a bold show with a searching pace guaranteed.

There may also be some mileage in a small play on ROGUE MILLENNIUM in the Matron (2.50pm). She’s not quite hit her stride this year, but she’s running a bit better every time, her stable has been going strong these last few weeks, and she ran her best race in this last year.
