William Hill ambassador Nick Luck is here with his best bets from day 1 of Glorious Goodwood.

NOBLE HORIZON looks too good to resist for rookie trainer Oli Rix in Goodwood’s opener, the Chesterfield Cup (1.50pm). He was a fair horse for William Haggas, but a gelding operation and a yard switch seem to have gingered him up, judged on his romp over fair animals at Leicester. De Sousa will have him out and rolling, and he could take a fair bit of pegging back, even in this stronger race.
DR RASCAL might have been underestimated in the Vintage Stakes (2.25pm). He’s won both his starts but was particularly impressive when showing great professionalism in slamming a couple of really well-regarded horses at Ascot, particularly as he had got loose through no fault of his own beforehand. He should enjoy this track and conditions and can take another step up the ladder.
QIRAT looks a shade bigger than he should be against Lake Forest in the Lennox Stakes (3.00pm). His record at Goodwood is outstanding, and he really came back strongly returned to seven furlongs at York in the first-time tongue tie. He’ll get a lead from Witness Stand and possibly Rogue Diplomat and could easily have the perfect trip.
While Scandinavia and Trawlerman are likely to serve up something special in the Goodwood Cup (3.35pm), I wondered whether a small each way play on FRENCH MASTER at huge odds might be the punting angle. He’s a pretty sketchy customer at the best of times, but he’s very talented and could easily pick up some pieces when it’s all over, particularly coming back to 2 miles. He ran ok last year and wouldn’t have to do much more to hit the frame this time round.
GLAMOROUS BREEZE is an each-way play in the five-furlong handicap (4.10pm). Although she’s eight, she’s knocked in three consecutive career best efforts of late and was particularly eye catching with the way she travelled in a good race at Ascot. This emphasis on brazen speed will suit better, and she can at least cling on for a slice of the money.
SAVAGE MARINER can take the six-furlong maiden (4.45pm). He ripped off a shoe in the gate at Ascot, so that run is readily ignored, but his debut effort behind Libertango at Leicester should see him right amongst it.
ANNASTARZY can extend her winning sequence in the mile handicap for fillies (5.20pm). She was especially good last time, really value for a fair bit more having raced a little lazily near the front. She’s well drawn to execute similar tactics here, has already shown form at this venue, and her dam was particularly good at Goodwood into the bargain.
