Nick Luck’s blog: Emily looks back on the Up in the Nassau

William Hill ambassador Nick Luck picks out his best bets on day three of Glorious Goodwood.
Goodwood, Thursday
SISYPHEAN looks quite a big price to figure in the Goodwood opener (1:50pm). The breathing operation looked to have worked well on his last start, as he appeared every inch the promising horse he had looked on his debut at York last year. While the rise in the weights is steep, his physique and pedigree strongly suggest that he could be up to it. Conditions look ideal too.
THE STRIKIN VIKING is a pretty steady favourite in the Richmond (2:25pm). One thing apparent since this horse’s debut has been his abundant natural pace, something he showed again when going down narrowly to a good one in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh. This relative test of speed can suit well, and he can prove a high-profile recruit for his new trainer.
MEYDAAN looks a sporting play in the Gordon (3:00pm). A work in progress, he looked to be getting the hang of things here earlier in the year. Although he might give the impression of being a real galloper, I’m not sure his pedigree bears that out – he’s possibly just a bit unfurnished – and I’m hopeful that a drop back to a mile and a half will suit.
EMILY UPJOHN can win the Nassau (3:35pm). Although plenty are losing faith, her run at the Curragh entitles her to be a shorter priced favourite than she is. Opera Singer will likely improve for the step up in trip, but – in a strongly run race and a biggish field – Emily should be able to switch off better and use that single furlong pace that can be absolutely devastating. She arguably has her ground for the first time this season.
