Nick Luck’s blog: Back Jimi Hendrix to find the right tune in Cambridgeshire

Newmarket, Saturday

FLYING HONOURS should simply be too classy to beat in the Royal Lodge at Newmarket on Saturday (1.50pm). He’ll be no price at 8/15, but looked out of the top drawer at Salisbury when dispatching impressive Newbury winner Stormbuster, and it will be disappointing if he is beaten.

TRILLIUM is confidently expected to win the Cheveley Park Stakes (2.25pm) at 5/2. She has been impressive in her two pattern wins over five furlongs, particularly when running down the rapid The Platinum Queen in the Flying Childers. But everything about her says she should be better over six furlongs, and – if that is the case – the others will have to go some to match her.

MARSHMAN gets the nod in the Middle Park (3.00pm) at 5/2. I was wildly impressed with his Gimcrack effort behind the very talented Noble Style, undone only for a bit of experience against a serious horse. It is even more to his credit that the run was backing up so quickly after a minor event just a few days earlier, and this more conventional spacing between races should have allowed him to make further progress.

JIMI HENDRIX is the selection in the Cambridgeshire (3.40pm) at 12/1 in a race William Hill are paying seven places on. Goodwood was a bit of a write-up, as he was parked in a terrible draw and has to race wide with no cover throughout. Prior to that he was moving forward really nicely and remains largely unexposed. Ground and track should be just about perfect, he looks to have a lovely draw here and the stable continues to go well.

Curragh, Saturday

CONTINUOUS is a speculative pick at 5/1 in the Curragh’s Beresford Stakes (1.35pm). Aidan O’Brien has more than one talented colt here, but his effectiveness at the track first time out coupled with his pedigree suggests that there is little between them, and the prices dictate that this is the bet.

OVIEDO can send the Goffs Million back to the UK (3.20pm) at 13/2. Very warmly regarded by his trainer Ed Bethell, this colt ran a tremendous race in the Acomb at York, a race which has worked out extremely well. A reproduction of that puts him right in the mix, and he won’t mind a bit of cut in the ground either.

Haydock, Saturday

WANEES is the interesting runner at 9/1 in the Old Boston at Haydock (2.05pm). This is another one dealt a rotten draw at Goodwood, but his efforts at Sandown and Ascot make him very competitive here. If the gelding op has had the desired effect, he should go well off this mark, particularly as ease in the ground won’t hinder his chances.

ALLIGATOR ALLEY looks ready to win in the sprint (2.40pm) at 6/1. This is a slightly easier race than some he’s been tackling, and there’s a nice bit of pace for him to run at. Last time showed that he was easily well enough handicapped if the cards drop right.
