Nick Luck’s Blog: Ylang Ylang’s chances are growing at Newmarket

Friday, Newmarket

TARAWA might be an each-way play at 8/1 in an open looking curtain raiser to Newmarket’s Friday TV fixture (1.50pm). There is a pound between seven of these, and the selection is right there in the mix on ratings. Added to that, a sound surface and the likelihood of a more sustained pace should suit, particularly given the way she stayed on from an unpromising position last time.

NOVAKAI looks to have plenty going for her in the Princess Royal (2.25pm). She posted a career best here in the Fillies’ Mile last autumn and seems well suited by undulating tracks. Her effort in the Yorkshire Oaks can be marked up on the basis that she tried to put it up to Savethelastdance and paid, still rallying quite gamely. This is significantly easier, and she looks sure to go well under perfect conditions. 9/2.

YLANG YLANG must be given another chance in the Rockfel (3.00pm). Whatever ailed her in the Moyglare is anyone’s guess, but she was looked after by Ryan Moore and can repay the patience. This is not the strongest edition, and her previous spanking of Vespertilio is the clear standout form. 10/3.

MUTASAABEQ looks the answer to the Joel Stakes (3.35pm) at 7/2. His record here is outstanding, he loves fast ground, and he could quite easily develop an early break on this field. Clearly Maljoom would be a tough nut on his three year old form, but he’s been off for ages and I’m happy to watch him win.
