Nick Luck’s Blog: Quick to answer the Call on Day Three at York

William Hill ambassador Nick Luck looks over day three’s action from the Knavesmire.

York, Friday

WOOTTON’SUN can give Paul Hanagan his farewell winner in York’s Day Three opener (1.50pm) at 7/2. A tough, consistent galloper, he ran a huge race to pull clear with Ebor fancy Scampi in the Shergar Cup. A sounder surface will be no issue, and the track should suit.

QUICKTHORN is underestimated again in the Lonsdale (2.25pm). So much was made of the canny ride at Goodwood, the market seems to have forgotten his demolition job in this last year, when there was barely a horse in training that could have laid a glove on him. It’s also worth remembering that the horse he walloped was Coltrane. He should be favourite, not 10/3.

KING’S GAMBLE is the play in the Gimcrack (3.00pm) at 7/1. He made a striking impression at Newmarket on his debut, coming home in the style of a pattern class performer. He has an appealing blend of quality and speed in his pedigree and is in extremely reliable hands.

TWILIGHT CALLS gets the each-way vote in the Nunthorpe (3.35pm) at 16/1. This is not a straightforward horse, but he is very fast and very talented. A lightning fast five furlongs is right up his street – take out that silly draw race at Haydock and his record on good-to-firm is two wins and a second to Nature Strip in the King’s Stand. Had he not had a shocking trip in the same race this year, he’d have been right there with Bradsell and Highfield Princess.

CHELSEA GREEN has claims in the fillies’ race (4.10pm) at 12/1. She’s a progressive filly who ran a super race at Vichy last time, when a shade keen and asked to make her move into a quickening tempo. A truer run race will suit her better and Rossa Ryan will help her to settle.
