Coventry Stakes History

The Coventry Stakes is a prestigious Group 2 flat race for two-year-olds, held annually at Ascot Racecourse during Royal Ascot. Established in 1890 and named after the 9th Earl of Coventry, it is contested over a straight six furlongs (1,207 metres) on turf.

The race is renowned for launching the careers of future stars, with notable past winners including Mill Reef (1970), Chief Singer (1983), Henrythenavigator (2007), and Dawn Approach (2012).

The 2024 edition, held on June 18, featured a remarkable upset. Eighteen-year-old jockey Billy Loughnane secured his first Royal Ascot victory aboard Rashabar, an 80/1 outsider trained by Brian Meehan. The colt, a son of Holy Roman Emperor, narrowly defeated Electrolyte and Columnist, both trained by Wathnan Racing, by a nose.

The Coventry Stakes continues to be a significant event for emerging juvenile talent, often serving as a stepping stone to future Classic success.
