Royal Hunt Cup Trends & Best Bets For 2026

A look at the key trends and important race statistics relating to the Royal Hunt Cup, one of the standout handicap races at the Royal Ascot meeting.

The Royal Hunt Cup always provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting as a maximum field of 30 runners thunders up the Straight Mile course for one of the biggest horse racing betting races of the season.

Notable Winners

  • Master Vote (1947 & 1948) is the only horse to have won the Royal Hunt Cup twice.
  • Buzzards Bay (1982) landed a prestigious handicap double when winning this race and the John Smith’s Cup at York a month later.
  • Cesare (2006) progressed into high-class miler, with his highest achievement coming at Ascot in the 2007 Summer Mile.
  • Real World (2021) followed up his Royal triumph with four straight wins in Stakes company.

Overseas-Trained Winners (Since 1960)

  • Ireland (3): Continuation (1966), Portage (2016), Settle For Bay (2018).

Starting Prices (SINCE 1960)

  • Longest-priced winner: Pontenuovo 50/1 (1990).
  • Shortest-priced winner: My Cloud 3/1 (2025).

Market leaders: Only 6 favourites or joint favourites have been successful since 1960.

Most Successful Trainers In Royal Hunt Cup (Since 1960)

  • John Sutcliffe Jr – Tempest Boy (1972), My Hussar (1977), Tender Heart (1980).
  • John Dunlop – Camouflage (1973), Patriarch (1986), Eurolink The Lad (1991).
  • Saeed bin Suroor – Invisible Man (2010), Real World (2021), Wild Tiger (2024).

Most Successful Jockey In Royal Hunt Cup (Since 1960)

  • Lester Piggott – 4 wins. Spaniard’s Close (1963), Casabianca (1965), Kamundu (1969), Jumping Hill (1976).

Most Successful Owner In Royal Hunt Cup (Since 1960)

  • Godolphin – 5 wins. Invisible Man (2010), Portage (2016), Dark Vision (2020), Real World (2021), Wild Tiger (2024).

Significant Royal Hunt Cup Trends

  • Age: Horses aged 4 have had a massive edge, accounting for 8 of the last 12 winners. Add them to the five-year-olds and they have won 36 of the last 40 runnings. For betting purposes, it certainly makes sense to ignore any horse aged 6 or over.
  • Sex: The last 12 winners were male (geldings and colts).
  • Weight: 10 of the last 11 winners carried 9st 5lb or less. The mean number for the winning handicap has generally fallen within the 95 to 103 bracket.
  • Draw: 12 winners have come from stall 11 or higher, with several coming from stalls 19+.
  • Odds: Only 1 favourite has won in the last 12 years (Wild Tiger in 2024). 9 of the last 12 winners have returned at a starting price between 10/1 and 33/1.
  • Overall Key Trend: Four-year-old male horses carrying 9st 5lb or less and drawn in double-figure stalls are statistically are best placed to land this famous handicap.

Royal Hunt Cup Antepost Tips 2026

At the time of writing, 97 horses are currently entered for the Royal Hunt Cup, but there a small handful that I have identified as good early value each-way punts.

Sporting the famous colours of the famous Shadwell Estate, the Charlie Hills-trained ELARAK (25/1) catches my eye.

The Kingman-gelding fits the right age profile, and is sure to come on plenty for his handicap debut at the start of May.

Suffolk Stakes runner-up FIFTH COLUMN (16/1) could well be a Group class horse masquerading as a handicapper, and is on my punting radar as the potential winner of the Cup.

Representing the two powerhouses of Gosden and Godolphin, he’s yet another Kingman-gelding to have in your armoury.

Royal Hunt Cup Selections 2026

  • Fifth Column (16/1) & Elarak (25/1) – both each way.
