St James’s Palace Stakes History
The St James’s Palace Stakes is a prestigious Group 1 flat race held annually at Ascot Racecourse during Royal Ascot. In 2024, it took place on Tuesday 18th June, covering a distance of 7 furlongs and 213 yards (approximately 1,603 meters) on turf. Open to three-year-old colts, the race attracts top milers from around the world.
The 2024 edition featured a remarkable performance by Rosallion, trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Sean Levey. The colt, owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, secured victory with a strong finish, overcoming a brief lack of room over 2 furlongs out.
Rosallion edged past Aidan O’Brien’s Henry Longfellow to win by a neck, with French Guineas winner Metropolitan finishing third. The winning time was 1 minute 38.38 seconds, marking a fast run by 0.82 seconds.
Rosallion’s triumph added to the growing prestige of the St James’s Palace Stakes, highlighting its significance in the Royal Ascot calendar and the race continues to serve as a key event for emerging milers aiming to make their mark in Group 1 company.
