Sandown Tips: Jonbon The Headline Act As Jumps Season Comes To An End

The jumps season finale at Sandown this weekend features the bet365 Gold Cup and the Celebration Chase, with William Hill News previewing each race on Saturday’s card.

Crowned on Saturday will be the Champion Jockey, Owner, Trainer, Conditional and Horse of the Year – all before the racing begins!

Sandown Betting Tips:

  • 1.13 – La Luna Artista
  • 1.45 – Wilstar (NB)
  • 2.20 – Matterhorn
  • 2.55 – Jonbon (NAP)
  • 3.30 – Certainly Red
  • 4.02 – Kabral Du Mathan
  • 4.40 – Go West
  • 5.15 – Favour And Fortune

Our horse racing expert Steven Mullington takes you through the eight race card:

1.13 – 2m Fillies’ Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

This is a wide open handicap for the girls, but I will just give the edge to the Jane Williams-trained LA LUNA ARTISTA who has had a wonderful season to date.

A wide margin winner against the boys in the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton, she can do the same thing against her own sex today.

1.45 – 2m Novices’ Handicap Hurdle

The Olly Murphy-trained WILSTAR (NB) has won his last two novice hurdles comfortably (Warwick & Southwell), and is a generous each-way price in our market.

The six-year-old hasn’t looked back since having wind surgery last November.

2.20 – 2m6½f Oaksey Chase (Grade 2)

Proven in Graded company already, MATTERHORN can reach the summit once more in this end of season Grade 2 feature.

Second last time at Plumpton, this step up in trip is well worth the gamble by Paul Nicholls.

2.55 – 2m Celebration Chase (Grade 1)

JONBON (NAP) is the star attraction in the Celebration Chase, bidding for his thirteenth Grade 1 victory.

The ten-year-old is in action for the first time since filling the runner-up spot in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. On all known form, he’s the one they all have to beat here.

3.30 – 3m4½f bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase

He may be the elder statesman of the party, but I cannot ignore the 28/1 odds available about the Lydia Richards-trained CERTAINLY RED in this marathon test.

The seven-time career scorer thrives in these type of races and over these kind of distances. After some enforced time off, he has come back to the racecourse as gutsy as he ever was, and I can “certainly” make an each-way case for him.

4.02 – 2m5½f Select Hurdle (Grade 2)

The Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day was won by KABRAL DU MATHAN and he can add this Grade 2 to his haul too.

Dan Skelton’s charge finished fourth in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last month and should outclass this field.

4.40 – 2m4f Novices’ Handicap Chase

GO WEST has had a productive season, including a win at Musselburgh in February and a fourth place finish in the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase at Kempton.

On a rating of 139, he’s going to be hard to beat today.

5.15 – 2m4f Handicap Hurdle

FAVOUR AND FORTUNE was one of my strong placepot fancies at Aintree, and Alan King’s eight-year-old duly obliged with a solid third placed run in the William Hill Handicap.

Although he is racing off top weight on Saturday, he is a strong each-way selection in our sports betting market.
