Southwell Horse Racing Tips – Sunday 4th January 2026

A racehorse in training on Newmarket gallops on a cold morning in winter.

The British Horseracing Authority have added an additional afternoon All-Weather fixture at Southwell on Sunday 4th January 2026, in light of the forecast for cold weather over the coming days.

Our horse racing expert Steven Mullington casts his eye over the nine-race bonanza.

1.00pm – 7f Handicap (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-65)

Trainer Tony Carroll is a genius with his low graded runners on the AW, and his top-weighted DAPPER GEE GEE is a solid each-way play in our horse racing betting.

The top-rated four-year-old can add to his one and only career victory thus far.

1.30pm – 7f Handicap (Class 5) (4yo+ 0-75)

Course and distance winner HOW IMPRESSIVE should be right in the mix once again for the Hugo Palmer stable.

The eight-time AW scorer will be ridden by the excellent  Pierre-Louis Jamin, who rode a nice winner at Chelmsford on Friday.

2.00pm – 6f Handicap (Div I) (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-55)

Tony Carroll is my go to man again here with his last time out winner MAGNA (NAP).

The filly scored for the very first time at Kempton 18 days ago, leading for home one furlong out and showing plenty of resolution. She looks the type to follow up.

2.30pm – 6f Handicap (Div II) (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-55)

I’ve had my eye on HORUS since I noticed him just fading away in the last furlong in a seven furlong contest at Lingfield on 22 Dec. This drop back to six is a smart move by Mike Murphy.

3.00pm – 5f Handicap (Class 4) (4yo+ 0-85)

Course and distance winner HIYA MAITE can reverse places with Ziggy’s Triton on the back of receiving 4lb’s from his previous race conqueror. I believe this weight difference will be critical in determining the result at Southwell today.

3.35pm – 5f Handicap (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-55)

David Evans has managed to get a victory out of FOREST GUNNER were Davis Simcock couldn’t, and this return to five furlongs should pay dividends for the five-year-old.

I also like selecting horses that are also part-owned by their actual trainer. There’s usually some significance in their involvement.

4.05pm – 1m3f Handicap (Div I) (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-55)

The seven-year-old mare DUCHESS is a speculative each-way sports betting play here given her very poor win strike rate.

One win from 34 starts isn’t ideal, however I’ve noticed a few The Great Gatsby progeny fair well this week and her handy looking weight cannot be ignored.

4.35pm – 1m3f Handicap (Div II) (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-55)

KRISSY has been in red hot form of late, winning two of her last three starts and narrowly missing out in the other.

The nine horses below her in the handicap have mustered just one victory between them from 50+ starts, so you can see why the Jim Goldie top-weight is a confident selection in this middle distance affair.

5.05pm – 1m Classified Stakes (Class 6) (4yo+ 0-50)

Officially rated 50, I’m really sweet on NUTCRACKER in the lucky last at Southwell.

Last seen finishing fourth on the turf at Brighton, I can see the Tony Carroll-trained gelding being totally match fit for a return to the AW.
