St Leger Prize Money For 2025

The St Leger is the world’s oldest Classic and is the highlight of Doncaster’s four-day festival that dominates the UK Flat racing calendar in the month of September. The race itself will take place on Saturday 13th September at 3.40pm GMT.

With £700,000 of prize money on offer, the competition and the betting turnover will be very strong for this prestigious race.

Here is the prize money breakdown:

  • 1st = £ 396,970
  • 2nd = £ 150,500
  • 3rd = £ 75,320
  • 4th = £ 37,520
  • 5th = £ 18,830
  • 6th = £ 9,450

Entry Fees And Declarations

  • Enter by noon, August 5th and pay £2000 stake.
  • Scratch by noon on August 26th or pay £3000.
  • Confirm by noon on September 8th and pay £2000.
  • Supplementary entry by noon, September 8th and pay £50,000 stake.
  • Declare by 10.00 a.m. September 11th.

Weights And Conditions

  • Colts = 9st 3lb
  • Fillies = 9st

NOTE: Horses will only be eligible to run in this race provided that they have a current BHA Handicap Rating of 80 or higher at midday of the confirmation stage.

Horses which do not qualify for a rating may also be eligible providing the BHA Handicapper is satisfied that the horse’s racecourse performances up to and including the day before confirmation merit a provisional assessment of 80 or higher. Horses which have not run will not be eligible.

Sponsorship And Prizes

A UK bookmaker has generously sponsored this race and will present a memento to the winning Owner, Trainer and Jockey.

Doncaster Racecourse will also present an embroidered jockey’s cap to the winning rider.

A trophy will also be presented in memory of the late Major Dick Hern, CVO, CBE, to be held by the winning trainer until August 1st, 2026.

A cash prize of £500 will be presented to the person judged to be responsible for the best turned out horse in this race.

All number cloths to be carried in this race have been sponsored and will carry the name/logo of the sponsor.

The sponsorship payment of £500 will be distributed equally amongst all horses starting in this race in accordance with paragraphs 24 to 27 of the Stakes and Prize Money Code.

Current Entries:

There are 15 runners left at the latest declaration stage – with Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien holding eight of those entries.

O’Brien’s remaining entries are: Scandinavia, Lambourn, Stay True, Tennessee Stud, Minnie Hauk, Shackleton, Thrice, Saratoga and Galveston.

A further two runners are from Ireland also. Joseph O’Brien has entered Tennessee Stud, while Paddy Twomey sends over Carmers.

English trainers account for five of the runners. Andrew Balding may well field three in the shape of Arabian Force, Tarriance and Further. Roger Varian currently has Rahiebb engaged, with Charlie Johnston rooting for his horse Lazy Grif.
