Curragh Tips: Tattersalls Gold Cup Betting Tips & Predictions (2025)

Irish Oaks

The Irish Guineas festival takes place at the Curragh this weekend and racing fans are not only treated to the two Group 1 Guineas races, but also the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup over 1m2½f.

Punters looking for our Irish 2000 Guineas preview and Irish 1000 Guineas preview can read our tips and predictions at The Curragh ahead of this weekend’s meeting.

The statistics and trends for this race are highly significant, and must have some influence and bearing on who you choose to bet on.

  • The last 9 winners of the Gold Cup were aged 4 or 5, with four-year-olds being successful 6 times during that period.
  • 7/10 came into the race on the back of a top-three finish, while 4 winners were making their Group 1 breakthrough.
  • 10/10 winners were priced 8/1 or shorter.
  • 9/10 having scored over at least 1m2f.

Tattersalls Gold Cup Contenders

Los Angeles (9/4) and White Birch (3/1) will go head-to-head for the second time this season in the Tattersalls Gold Cup on Sunday.

The pair met earlier this month in the Mooresbridge Stakes when Aidan O’Brien’s Irish Derby winner came out on top by the smallest of margins and the pair have dominated Royal Ascot odds in previous years.

White Birch, trained by John Murphy, beat the former Ballydoyle runner Auguste Rodin in this corresponding race last season but a setback prevented him from running again.

He’s right back at the top of his game, but preference has to be with Los Angeles who should thrive on the extra half furlong, plus Aidan O’Brien has a superb winning record in this contest.

Hot on their hooves in the betting comes the Andrew Balding-trained Kalpana (7/2 in our horse racing odds), who is among the favourites for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and is due to make her seasonal return.

She was last seen at Ascot on Champions Day winning the Fillies & Mares Stakes impressively, but missed her intended comeback in York’s Middleton Fillies’ Stakes last week due to  a dirty scope.

Juddmonte are keen for Kalpana to fill the considerable void that Bluestocking has left after her retirement.

Another Champions Day winner was Owen Burrows’ Anmaat (7/1), and he just so happens to be the oldest horse in the field at the age of seven. Stats wise, that doesn’t bode well for his chances, but stats are there to be broken.

Speaking on the Nick Luck podcast, Burrows said: “We’ve got to be realistic, it’s his first start of the season and White Birch, Los Angeles, they’ve all had starts. Clive’s horse (Ghostwriter) ran in Dubai so it’s going to be tough but we’ve got to get his season started and timing-wise this works well.”

As alluded to by Burrows, Clive Cox comes into the race with a superb chance too. Ghostwriter (5/1) finished third in both the Eclipse and Juddmonte International last season, as well as taking fourth in the 2,000 Guineas and Prix du Jockey Club. His fourth in Meydan was extremely encouraging too.

Almaqam, Al Riffa and Royal Rhyme add further strength in depth to the contest.

2025 Tattersalls Gold Cup Prediction: Ghostwriter (5/1, E/W)
