Wetherby Tips: Best Bets On Saturday 1st November 2025

The highlight fixture in Wetherby’s season features two-Claas 1 races on the Friday and the £100,000 Charlie Hall Steeplechase on Saturday.
Held at Wetherby racecourse, the Charlie Hall Chase is a Grade 2 contest run over 3m1f. With 18 fences to be jumped in total, this early season stamina test brings some of the top chasers back to the fore and is often a good pointer to which horses will be contesting the big races this season.
12.40pm – 2m Novices’ Hurdle (Go North Night Nurse Series Qualifier) (Class 3)
It wasn’t so long ago that trainer Pam Sly had one of the best strike rates at Wetherby, and when she sends one to the West Yorkshire track, it usually has some sort of a chance.
Her runner SLEEPING LATE made steady progress in each of his three runs last season, and his runner-up finish to Sir Galahad here in March turning out to be very good form as that horse went on to notch up a four-timer.
1.15pm – 2m3½f Handicap Chase (Class 3) (4yo+ 0-125)
I’d love to tip up my old Wetherby favourite Ladronne here, but it really won’t be soft enough for the old boy here, so my pick is TOP TARGET instead.
The former winning pointer has had just six runs, and he is a previous winner over hurdles at this track. Kim Bailey and Mat Nicholls are sure to have schooled this son of Westerner well.
1.50pm – 2m Mares’ Hurdle (Listed Race) (Class 1)
Admittedly GOLDEN ACE was somewhat lucky to win the Champion Hurdle last season, but she is certainly the best of the three runners assembled here for this Listed Mares’ Hurdle.
Rated 152, Jeremy Scott’s seven-year-old should have too much in the tank for her two rivals who are rated 145 and 136.
2.22pm – 3m Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The West Yorkshire Hurdle) (Class 1)
At odds of around 12/1, I really do think Nicky Henderson’s DODDIETHEGREAT is well overpriced, given what he has achieved thus far.
After winning the Pertemps Final at The Festival, he then went to Punchestown and ran a blinder in a Listed Handicap Hurdle. He’s an each-way play all day long in this Wetherby feature.
2.57pm – 3m Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2) (Class 1)
DJELO (NAP) had a superb 2024/2025 season for Venetia Williams, winning the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon and the Denman at Newbury, beating Hitman in the latter. That form has been further franked with Hitman landing the Old Roan the other day.
His record fresh is excellent, and there is some rain around on Friday and Saturday, which will help immensely.
3.30pm – 2m Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) (3yo+ 0-130)
Course and distance winner GO DANTE may well be shouldering top-weight here, but has the quality to defy that penalty for Olly Murphy – one of our trainers to follow this jumps season.
Last season’s Imperial Cup winner showed his battling qualities at Sandown, and should be in the thick of things here.
4.05pm – 3m Handicap Chase (Class 4) (4yo+ 0-120)
Fiona Needham’s RED DELTA was very impressive when winning under Rules at Sedgefield a fortnight ago, and holds an excellent chance of following up at Wetherby.
The six-year-old is a very solid jumper, and I cannot see him being out of the places today.
