Taking its name from ‘Eboracum’, the Roman name for York, the Ebor Handicap is the feature race of the entire York Ebor Festival.

You can read Steve Mullington’s Day 4 tips for the 2025 York Ebor Festival here

The 2025 contenders for this year’s big race are as follows:

French Master (John & Thady Gosden)

Has contested some top races this season, including winning the Copper Horse at Royal Ascot. He’s a leading player – even off top weight.

Hipop De Loire (Willie Mullins)

Warmed up for this contest with a decisive hurdles victory at Galway. Really fancied to improve upon his fifth place in this race last year.

Yashin (Michael Bell)

Largely out of form since winning the Sagaro Stakes in April. Has been highly tried, however.

Queenstown (Aidan O’Brien)

Galileo-gelding who is yet to find his mojo and his correct racing distance.

Kihavah (Adrian Keatley)

Dual purpose runner who ran a belter in the Summer Hurdle and he’s a lively outsider for the lucrative Ebor prize at big odds.

Ethical Diamond (Willie Mullins)

Landed the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot and is understandably one of the favourites to go well again.

London City (Aidan O’Brien)

Has been the subject of plenty of support in recent days and hails from a major yard that cannot be ignored.

Onesmoothoperator (Brian Ellison)

Former Newcastle Plate winner who has the potential to outrun his odds.

Subsequent (Andrew Balding)

Not really one of Balding’s leading lights and needs to run his best race ever to figure.

Real Dream (Ian Williams)

Ran reasonably well in the Copper Horse and the trainer can ready one for this type of race.

Roaring Legend (Hugo Palmer)

Finished fourth at Newmarket last month and one always needs to keep an eye on Hugo Palmer’s runners.

Stressfree (David O’Meara)

Kicked off this season in tremendous form but appears to have tailed off as of late.

Shadow Dance (Roger Varian)

The grey gelding is quietly fancied to run a top race for the Roger Varian stable on Saturday.

Siege Of Troy (Johnny Murtagh)

Has run well in Listed events and at Royal Ascot and enters calculations.

Enemy (Ian Williams)

One of two runners for owners Bell & Lyons, but this eight-year-old appears to be the lesser lite of the pair.

Oneforthegutter (Saffie Osborne)

Third in last season’s November Handicap and jockey Saffie Osborne has already ridden a 33/1 winner at York this week.

Ascending (Henry De Bromhead)

Arrives on the Knavesmire in search of a hat-trick after landing the Cork Derby and the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting. He will be very popular in the betting.

Almosh’her (Karl Burke)

Sea The Stars gelding, whose connections will be hoping can excel again after that recent medical procedure.

Majestic Warrior (James Tate)

James Tate’s five-year-old has the potential to step up another notch from his recent Thirsk victory.

Charlus (Willie Mullins)

This horse may be a Willie Mullins “outsider”, but we all know that means nothing when it comes to the master Irish trainer.

Fleetfoot (Jim Bolger)

Bolger’s five-year-old has been running well in Irish handicaps this season and gets into the Ebor off a handy low weight.

Mr Percy (Joseph O’Brien)

Interesting jockey booking in the shape of Tom Marquand for this Munir & Souede-owned dual purpose horse. The current 20/1 price in our horse racing betting market looks too big for this bottom weight.

Ebor Handicap selections for 2025: Onesmoothoperator (33/1) & Mr Percy (20/1) E/W singles.
