York Tips Day 1: 2026 Ebor Festival Predictions
William Hill News look ahead to the opening day of the 2026 York Ebor Festival, with race-by-race analysis following declarations for Wednesday’s racing.
Steve Mullington previews the action on the Knavesmire, so scroll down and read up on his York selections on Day 1.
1:50pm World Pool Stakes Handicap 5½f
Trainer Ed Bethell is currently flying high with a 41% win strike rate this last fortnight, and it would come as no surprise to see COROLLA POINT scorch home in front in the opening sprint.
Third here in a similar event at the Dante meeting, odds of 10/1 in our horse racing betting look ideal for an each-way flutter.
2:25pm Acomb Stakes (Group 3) 7f
ALFRED WALLACE won going away at Ascot in a seven furlong Listed race, so this marginal step up to Group 3 level is a natural progression for the youngster.
Whilst most of the betting market attention will be around the Irish raiders, this Dubawi-colt can justifying some of his fancy future entries with a bold show today.
3:00pm Great Voltigeur Stakes (Group 2) 1m4f
Punters will be chanting the words “IT’S CHRISTMASSSS!” when the Derby winner CHRISTMAS DAY (NAP) re-establishes himself as the king of the 1m4f trip on the Knavesmire.
When push comes to shove, the battle hardened three-year-old can pull it out of the bag once more against his main rival Maltese Cross.
3:35pm Juddmonte International Stakes (Group 1) 1m2f
OMBUDSMAN (NB) won this race last year and is trying to become the first horse in 30 years to win back-to-back Juddmonte Internationals.
With the level of form he has showed already this season it is understandable that punters make him the short-priced favourite in our sports betting.
A repeat of his Prince of Wales’s Stakes performance at Royal Ascot would well and truly put Constitution River’s challenge to bed on Wednesday afternoon.
4:10pm Stayers Stakes Handicap 2m
Andrew Balding’s SHRIMP SHADY has been a favourite of mine since I saw him win at Chester’s May Meeting earlier in the season.
The four-year-old has held his form well over these marathon trips and there is every reason to believe that this son of Mastercraftsman will be in the winner’s enclosure come 4.20pm.
4:45pm Irish Thoroughbred Handicap 5f
BAKER BLUE may only have run on Sunday at Pontefract, but Dylan Cunha is probably quite right to let him follow up quickly at York.
Five furlongs sprints at Pontefract are no easy feat, but the three-year-old acquitted himself well, finishing a competitive third behind the overall winner. I’d like to think he’ll find the York track somewhat easier and he’s of each-way interest.
5:20pm Nursery Heritage Handicap (2yo) 6f
Shane Foley teams up with the Gosden’s in the lucky last aboard NOTE TO SELF.
The Too Darn Hot-colt has performed pretty well thus far this season, and he goes handicapping off a nice mark of 8st 9lb.
