Austrian Grand Prix

Formula One heads to Spielberg for the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend.

Oscar Piastri, owning a 22-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship, is the F1 betting favourite for pole and to win the race. Lando Norris lost ground last time out after a clash with his teammate, which he accepted responsibility for.

Max Verstappen, a four-time winner at Red Bull’s home race, is priced at 11/4 in the betting markets to take pole position. The Dutchman hasn’t claimed a pole since the Miami Grand Prix and only has one race win to his name over the last seven races.

Austrian Grand Prix Odds

  • Oscar Piastri – 7/4
  • Lando Norris – 2/1
  • Max Verstappen – 7/2
  • George Russell – 8/1
  • Charles Leclerc – 16/1
  • Lewis Hamilton – 25/1
  • Kimi Antonelli – 33/1

Major Ferrari Upgrades

Ferrari are expected to bring their biggest upgrade of the year to the Red Bull Ring as they try to close the gap to the top three teams.

Lewis Hamilton hasn’t been shy about expressing his frustrations with the car.

“We are really in need of an upgrade and there’s lots of things that need to change for us to compete at the front.”

Fred Vasseur isn’t too optimistic about the changes, saying it will be hundredths rather than tenths at this stage of the regulatory cycle. He also noted how long it has taken to adapt to previous upgrades.

Speaking about their chances for this weekend, Vasseur said, “The pace was decent in Barcelona that we were quick in sector one there. We were quick in Monaco.

“Even before the weekend, you have to put everything together in the right place if you want to achieve a good result. In the tyre usage and the tyre performance, I think there is much more in that, than between the cars.”

Floor upgrades, and changes to the rear suspension, are something to watch out for in Austria. It’s not going to turn Ferrari’s season around, but it could help them compete for podium places.

Russell Flying High

George Russell won in Austria 12 months ago and claimed his first win of the season with an exemplary drive in Montreal.

Cooler track temperatures and quick corners favoured the Mercedes in Canada. Austria has plenty of sweeping corners in the second half of the lap, and the surface won’t be as hot as the cars had to deal with earlier in the year.

After a double podium in Montreal, Toto Wolff is very positive about their chances.

“The track in Spielberg will be a good test of our recent updates and provide another reference point for our progress. There is still a long way to go this season. We will look to maximise our points scoring and hopefully be able to challenge for the podium once again.”

Best Bet: George Russell Race Winner, Lando Norris Podium Finish, Lewis Hamilton Top Six Finish at 18/1

We’re backing the Brits in this week’s Your Odds best bet. Russell finally got a 25-point reward for an excellent first half of the season. This is a track he has happy memories of, and Mercedes are clearly confident their recent upgrades stand them in good stead here.

Norris has only missed the podium once in races he has completed this season. There didn’t seem to be any ill-feeling with Piastri that could snowball into a Hamilton-Rosberg situation. Norris cannot afford another DNF – claiming a podium is a satisfactory outcome at this stage of the season when he’s still within striking distance of his teammate.

Hamilton has registered four consecutive top six finishes. This hasn’t been his favourite venue, yet he’s still finished in the top six in nine of his 11 races.
