The Education Secretary is priced at 4/7, representing a 64% chance to take on the role, with Lucy Powell her nearest rival at 2/1 (33% chance).

Beyond the front two, the betting suggests it will take a big swing for another candidate to break through. Emily Thornberry (12/1) and Alison McGovern (14/1) have both announced their intention to run, while Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Paula Barker sit further back at 20/1 apiece.

Among those yet to confirm their candidacy, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and former Labour leader Ed Miliband are both priced at 25/1, alongside Alistair Carns.

Here are the latest odds to be the next Labour Deputy Leader after Angela Rayner:

  • Bridget Phillipson – 4/7
  • Lucy Powell – 2/1
  • Emily Thornberry – 12/1
  • Alison McGovern – 14/1

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “With six candidates already entering the race to be named the next Labour Party Deputy Leader, Bridget Phillipson has taken a notable lead in terms of nominations gained and that’s reflected in her price in our market.

“The Education Secretary is a firm 4/7 favourite, meaning we give her a 64% chance of stepping into Angela Rayner’s shoes. Judging by nominations, it could be a two-horse race, with Lucy Powell the only notable challenger at 2/1.

“Others that have announced their candidacy – Emily Thornberry (12/1), Alison McGovern (14/1), Bell Ribeiro-Addy (20/1) and Paula Barker (20/1) – are all much bigger prices, while of those yet to declare, David Lammy and Ed Miliband are the shortest at 25/1.”

While Bridget Phillipson is the market favourite to be named as Angela Rayner’s successor, it’s still a wide open race for the Labour candidates and based on historical UK politics, nothing is ever certain! Rayner’s former colleague Rachel Reeves could be the next to cabinet minister leave the government – check out more Politics odds with William Hill.
