Donald Trump
Republican candidate, billionaire businessman and former President of the United States Donald Trump now finds himself the 1/2 favourite to win the 2024 US presidential election and be re-elected as President.
Having led the country from 2016 to 2020, Trump’s stand for a second term as President failed as Joe Biden was elected, an election that was shrouded in controversy with Trump objecting to Biden’s votes being counted in swing states.
What came next was a flurry of protestors storming the Capitol building to stop the counting of the electoral votes, they were unsuccessful with the situation causing for Trump’s impeachment. This cast doubt on Trump’s planned campaign for the 2024 presidential election, however in November he announced at a rally that he would be running again for President.
How have his odds changed?
If we go back to around this time one year ago, Donald Trump was 11/8 to win the election, he now finds himself a strong 8/15 market leader, but how and what has changed his price over the course of the year?
Joe Biden
The current serving president Joe Biden was long considered to be the candidate contesting Donald Trump once again in the presidential race, however concerns over his ability to run caused several members of Congress to request him to withdraw from the race. This saw Trump shorten earlier on the year into as short as 1/3 due to the concerns over Biden when he was still thought to be in the running.
The nomination of Kamala Harris
In late July 2024, Joe Biden made the shock announcement of his withdrawal from the race, with Kamala Harris confirmed as the Democratic nominee. This saw Trump’s odds lengthen to as big as EVS, before settling at around 4/5 – 5/6. A fair drift from his price earlier on in the year.
The first presidential debate
Following the first Trump v Harris debate in September, Trump lengthened in odds to 11/10 with Harris shortening. Many felt more onboard with what Harris was saying and promising, and it seemed as if it was beginning to swing in her favour hence the support for her in the market.
The shortening of Trump
Ever since Trump touched 11/10 in September, he has been all the rage in the market continually shortening to a price now of 8/15. It’s been one of the biggest betting markets of the year and it’ll be fascinating to see which way it goes on Tuesday 5th November.
