The Grand National is held annually at Aintree racecourse, in Liverpool. The race, first run in 1839, is National Hunt racing’s most iconic event and has come a long way from its humble beginnings to now being watched in over 140 countries by an estimated 600 million people.
On Saturday, April 10th, the biggest names in horse racing descend on Aintree racecourse for the 171st renewal of the much-loved Grand National. It’s a handicap steeplechase that brings the UK to a standstill, as a bumper field battle it out over four miles and 30 jumps for a share of a cool £1m prize pot.
How many fences in the Grand National? 30 is the answer and most jockeys will probably tell you that the 30 obstacles around two circuits of Aintree’s Grand National jumps course are all challenging if the horse they’re riding doesn’t take to the unique spruce-covered obstacles that are the Grand National fences.
