Snooker World Championship preview: Robertson the firm favourite

| BY News Team

The World Championship is just around the corner. For the 16th and final ranking event of the season, we return to The Crucible on the April 16th and a winner will be crowned on the 2nd May.

Going into the tournament as the reigning champion, Mark Selby will be hoping he can successfully defend it, a feat that he last managed when winning back-to-back World Championships in 2016 and 2017.

In this blog, we take a look at the front end of the market for the upcoming tournament.

Robertson the man to beat

Neil Robertson has been having a fantastic season, having won the English Open, The Masters, the Players Championship and, most recently, the Tour Championship. It’s an impressive haul, but what’s been more impressive is the high standard the Aussie has consistently been playing at.

Robertson has one World Championship to his name, winning the 2010 edition to become the fourth non-UK winner behind Horace Lindrum, Cliff Thorburn and Ken Doherty. The Aussie is currently the market favourite to be crowned champion at 7/2. In last year’s event, Robertson exited in the quarter finals, so he’ll be looking to further improve this time around.

Trump looking to double his World Championship haul

Judd Trump hasn’t been firing on all cylinders this season but by winning both the Champion of Champions and the Turkish Masters he’s show that he’s not far off. Trump won his one and only World Championship in 2019, beating John Higgins. He’s been close since, reaching the quarter finals in the 2021 event, but will be eyeing up the final this time around.

Trump is the second-favourite to take this year’s crown and double his World Championship tally, currently sitting at 11/2. He’s got a tough draw, with a potential quarter final meeting with Kyren Wilson (16/1) before potentially meeting Mark Selby in the semi-finals (given all players win their respected games).

The Rocket eyeing up a record-equalling run

A man who is consistently at the front end of the market at any tournament he enters is Ronnie O’Sullivan. A household name who has been winning the big ones across decades, O’Sullivan is a firm fan favourite, especially when on-song. A six-time World Championship winner between 2001-present, only Stephen Hendry has won more (7).

The Rocket produced a fantastic performance in the World Grand Prix back in December, beating Neil Robertson 10-8. His last final appearance was in the European Masters, where he missed an opportunity to beat Fan Zhengyi. On his day he can produce magic and beat whoever is in front of him.

O’Sullivan is currently 6/1 to get his record-equalling seventh World Championship. He could be on a collision course to meet Neil Robertson in the semi-final which would certainly be a cracker.

Selby the defending Champion

As mentioned before, Mark Selby goes into the event as the current reigning Champion. He’s not shy of winning these events back-to-back, so doing so again is certainly not out of the question. A four-time World Champion, Selby certainly knows how to win these events.

Again, given both men win their respective games beforehand, The Jester could meet Judd Trump in the semi-final which is never an easy game. Selby rounds off the top four in the betting at 8/1.
