The first winter chill has swept across Britain and with snow already falling in parts of the country, the odds of waking up to a White Christmas have tumbled, according to William Hill.

Aberdeen leads the charge as the UK’s most likely city to see snow on December 25th, now priced at 6/5 from 5/4, giving the Scottish city an implied 46% chance of seeing festive flakes. Fellow Scottish cities Edinburgh and Glasgow have both shortened into 6/4 from 7/4, as forecasters hint at a colder-than-average December.

In England, Newcastle is the frontrunner at 7/4 (from 2/1), giving it a 36% probability of snow on Christmas Day. Leeds follows at 3/1, with Liverpool and Manchester both 4/1, while those dreaming of snow in the capital face longer odds – 7/1 for a White Christmas in London.

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “With the UK hit by the first icy blast of the year and plenty of snowfall across the nation, there could be more to come as the festive season gets into full swing.

“We’ve shortened the odds of a White Christmas in a host of UK cities, with Aberdeen given a 46% chance of seeing snowfall on the 25th of December, having shortened into 6/5 from 5/4, while Edinburgh and Glasgow are both now 6/4 from 7/4.

“According to the odds (7/4 from 2/1), Newcastle has a 36% chance of a White Christmas, a fair way ahead of the next English city in the betting, Leeds at 3/1, while snow in the capital on Christmas Day is a 7/1 chance.”

For many, the idea of snow on Christmas morning remains a festive dream and with temperatures dipping early this year, excitement (and betting interest) is already mounting.

Historically, the UK sees snow on Christmas Day roughly once every four years, though a true “White Christmas” (defined by the Met Office as at least one snowflake falling on December 25th) has occurred more frequently in Scotland than further south.

Aberdeen’s place at the top of the betting reflects strong past form – snow was recorded there on Christmas Day on numerous occasions within the last decade.

Meanwhile, Londoners hoping for a dusting of festive white will need a bit more luck, with the capital keeping temperatures just above freezing.

Meteorologists have pointed to a strengthening polar front this winter, suggesting colder-than-average conditions for late December, which is news that will delight punters backing a frosty festive scene.

While the weather remains unpredictable, William Hill’s early odds suggest the public could be in for a welcome surprise this year across the UK.
