European Athletics Championships Tips: 15th August

William Hill news take a look at the athletics betting markets ahead of a packed Saturday in the European Championships.

Men’s 1500 Metres

Jake Wightman (5/2) and Isaac Nader (5/4) are the men to beat in the men’s 1500 metres. Nader is the highest-ranked European over this distance, while Wightman won his heat.

Another Brit, Jake Heyward, went fastest in qualifying. He has to be taken seriously as a contender, though he’s yet to go below 3:30 this year, which is probably what will be needed for gold. Azzedine Habz certainly has that upside – he’s got value at 13/2.

Men’s 10,000 Metres

This is going to come down to Mohamed Abdilaahi or Andreas Almgren. The latter won bronze in the World Championships last year, but the former has the edge in the rankings and has the fastest time of any European this year.

Defending champion Dominic Lobalu and Mike Foppen, owner of the second-fastest European time in 2026, will be in medal contention, but Abdilaahi is our pick to stand atop the podium.

Men’s 4 x 100 Metres

Italy are always in the mix. Germany have the fastest time this year. Still, it’s Great Britain and Northern Ireland that stand out here with such outstanding pace.

Four of the seven fastest European 100-metre runners are British. If they can transfer the baton safely, this should be an issue win.

Women’s 4 x 100 Metres

Great Britain are defending champions and have a stellar relay team featuring medallists in Dina Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt. Germany are coming on strongly, though, and possess experience under the bright lights of major events.

Don’t be surprised if Spain notch their first-ever medal in this event. It’s the Brits or Germans for gold, and we fancy Great Britain to do a double in the 4 x 100 metres.

Women’s 400 Metres

The leading European at the London Stadium last month, Natalia Bukowiecka posted a season best in the semifinals. Henriette Jæger’s 49.15 at the same event was the fastest time by a European this season, however, and Lieke Klaver cruised to victory in her heat.

Amber Anning and Yemi Mari John provide British representation. It’s unlikely either can win gold, but they have a chance of landing a medal.

Women’s High Jump

Yaroslava Mahuchikh made it look easy in qualifying. The Ukrainian is one of only two Europeans to clear the two-metre mark in 2026. Angelina Topić, who won silver at the World Indoor Championships last year, is the biggest threat to Mahuchikh.

It would take a massively off day for Mahuchikh to fail to win gold. She’s a two-time European champion and the defending Olympic champion. Maria Żodzik and Topić were the only other Europeans in the top six in London.
