As 2024 ends, the sporting world looks back on a year filled with unforgettable moments and record-breaking performances.

We review the Top 5 Sporting Moments of 2024 below.

Keely Hodgkinson wins Olympic Gold

2024’s sporting achievements can’t be discussed without starting with Keely Hodgkinson winning the 800m Gold Medal at Paris 2024.

The 22-year-old has gone undefeated in the event throughout the year of 2024, which culminated in Olympic success. Hodgkinson became the first winner of a gold medal on the athletics track since 2016 when Sir Mo Farah completed a historical double of gold medals when winning the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races.

Becoming just the 10th British woman to win gold in the Athletics at the Olympics, she ended a 12-year drought of top spots in athletics stretching back to Jessica Ennis-Hill’s success at London 2012.

England’s run to the Euro 2024 final

One of the highly anticipated sporting events for the year was Euro 2024. The England national team arrived at the competition as one of the favourites.

The squad, led by Gareth Southgate, looked as strong as it had ever been with several of the players considered amongst the world’s best in the squad.

It wasn’t flashy, but they made it through the group stages by way of a win and two draws, setting up a Round of 16 tie with Slovakia. Many considered this a great opportunity for progression for England, but they found themselves a goal down early on, and unable to score as the game went on.

It was Jude Bellingham who stepped up in the 95th minute with a superb overhead kick to equalise and send the game to extra time, where Harry Kane notched to send them through.

A win on penalties against Switzerland next was hard fought and saw the Three Lions head into the semi finals to play Netherlands. Again, finding themselves a goal down the side completed an astonishing comeback when Ollie Watkins sent the country into pandemonium with his last-minute winner.

The final against Spain beckoned, but unfortunately the wait for a major international trophy goes on after a 2-1 loss in the final. A sad way to end the closest the side had come to a trophy in years, but it still goes down as one of the top sporting moments of 2024.

Luke Littler’s rise

Arguably the most popular sportsman of 2024 has been darts sensation Luke Littler.

His rise to prominence has been like something we have never seen before, from an unseeded player to arguably the best in the world.

He sprung a shock when reaching the final of the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship before just falling short at the hand of Luke Humphries.

His form and roll of honour since have proved that was no fluke, after winning the Premier League, the Grand Slam of Darts, the World Series Finals as well as several other ranking titles.

He’s the current 6/4 favourite for the 2025 PDC Darts World Championships and it’s not the last we will be hearing of Luke Littler.

Joe Root breaks all-time run record

2024 saw many records broken, one of the most notable was Joe Root breaking the English record for all-time Test runs in October.

The England captain notched his 12,473rd run in England’s test fixture against Pakistan, moving past previous record holder Sir Alastair Cook.

Jodie Grinham wins Paralympic gold whilst pregnant

It was a historical year on many fronts, and it become no different here when Team GB paralympic archer Jodie Grinham became the first ever athlete to win a Gold Medal at the Games when pregnant.

She won two medals in Paris, first a bronze medal in her individual event before striking gold in the mixed team compound final with teammate Nathan Macqueen.
