Winter Olympics Tips: Thrills And Spills In Milan on Tuesday Evening
There’s plenty of action to get stuck into on Tuesday night at the Winter Olympics, with tipster Sam Cox providing insight on curling, the Big Air competition, the women’s Slalom and ice hockey.
Canada vs Great Britain – Men’s Curling
With only two matches left to play in the round robin phase, Great Britain are teetering in the men’s curling standings. Despite being clear betting favourites for their matchup with calendar, the Brits are narrowly ahead of fifth-ranked USA.
Canada have won five of their first six contests in the men’s curling competition. Their only loss came at the hands of competition leaders Switzerland. Great Britain have lost three of their last five draws, falling to Sweden, Italy, and the Swiss.
This promises to be a very competitive matchup between two of the medal favourites. We’re taking over 11.5 points at 4/5.
Pick: Over 11.5 points (4/5)
Men’s Big Air Final
American Mac Forehand – a skier, not a tennis player – is the 2/1 favourite to win the Men’s Big Air final on Tuesday night. Birk Ruud (3/1) and Matej Svancer (4/1) trail Forehand in the latest odds.
Ruud is the defending Olympic champion in this event, and he was right behind Forehand in the qualifying round. Svancer split Ruud and Forehand, but there was very little to choose between the top three.
It’s worth noting that Troy Podmilsak, the leader of the freestyle skiing Big Air World Cup, is 7/1 in this event. Luca Harrington, who placed fifth in qualifying, has finished in the top three of all three World Cup events.
Pick: Luca Harrington (7/1)
Women’s Slalom
How can we look past Mikaela Shiffrin in this event? The American has won seven of the previous eight World Cup events. The one time she didn’t win, she still managed to finish in second place.
Camille Rast, as the only person to beat Shiffrin in the World Cup, is clearly the biggest threat. Rast is 6/1. Emma Aicher, who got a silver in the downhill, trails Rast in the betting markets, but recorded a DNF in the Super G and hasn’t finished higher than third in the slalom.
There’s pressure on Shiffrin. It’s likely her last shot at Olympic glory, and she’s enduring a medal drought by her historic standards. Still, her experience stands her in good stead for this race.
Pick: Mikaela Shiffrin (4/6)
Sweden vs Latvia – Men’s Hockey
Sweden are 1/12 favourites over Latvia in their hockey matchup on Tuesday night. Latvia’s only win in the round robin phase came over Germany, while Sweden won two and lost one, with their defeat to Finland coming by a single goal.
Sweden have seven wins from their last eight matches against Latvia. Their last two meetings have ended in emphatic Swedish wins.
While this bucks a longer-term trend, it shows the chasm between these two nations at the moment.
Pick: Sweden -2.5 (4/7)
