Madrid Open Quarter Finals: Sinner Surprise To Follow Sabalenka Shock?

| BY Sam Cox

Wednesday sees the final two women’s Madrid Open quarter-finals and the first two of the men’s draw take place. It’s been a tournament packed with surprises to date, including the elimination of Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday.

Madrid Open Tips – Quarter Finals:

  • Rafael Jódar +4.5 games (Evens)
  • Arthur Fils -2.5 games (17/20)
  • Marta Kostyuk vs Linda Nosková: Both players to win a set (11/8)
  • Karolína Plíšková +3.5 games (8/13)

Here are our tennis betting picks for Wednesday’s matches.

Jannik Sinner vs Rafael Jódar

This marks by far Rafael Jódar’s best showing at an ATP 1000 event. The teenage Spaniard has been a sensation on his home courts, beating Alex de Minaur, João Fonseca, and Vít Kopřiva to set up a meeting with the world number one.

After losing his first set to Benjamin Bonzi, Jannik Sinner has won two matches in typically emphatic fashion.

Jódar is not to be taken lightly. He won in Marrakech, reached the semis in Barcelona, and has already beaten a top 10 player in this run. Sinner is an altogether different challenge, but the Spaniard should be able to be competitive here.

Jiří Lehečka vs Arthur Fils

This is the third meeting of the year between these players. Jiří Lehečka beat Arthur Fils in the semi-final in Miami after Fils had a straight-sets win in Doha. Lehečka is a man in form after beating Alex Michelsen and Lorenzo Musetti.

Fils’ journey has been more straightforward with Tomás Martín Etcheverry as his biggest challenge. The Frenchman has won 21 out of 26 matches since returning from injury and is rapidly climbing the rankings.

A win in Barcelona laid down a clay-court marker for Fils. Lehečka has been playing some of his best tennis, but it’s right that the Frenchman is favoured for this contest.

Marta Kostyuk vs Linda Nosková

Marta Kostyuk has backed up a win in Rouen with a string of straight-sets wins in Madrid, including a drubbing of Jessica Pegula. Linda Nosková’s journey has featured a walkover and a dramatic comeback over Coco Gauff.

Both of these players have similar amounts of late-tournament experience. Nosková went to the semis at Indian Wells, while Kostyuk has been in the latter stages in Rouen.

This promises to be a highly competitive match. Kostyuk is unlikely to blow Nosková away like she did to Pegula.

Karolína Plíšková vs Anastasia Potapova

It’s remarkable these two players have got this far. Karolína Plíšková is in her first clay-court tournament post-injury, while Anastasia Potapova only entered the first round as a short-notice lucky loser.

Plíšková has beaten a pair of seeded players. Potapova followed up a comeback win over Jelena Ostapenko with a stunning victory over Elena Rybakina.

This is a match that could go either way. Potapova is favoured by the bookies, but Plíšková has been mightily impressive as she’s ramped up on her return from injury.
