Madrid Open Semi Finals: WTA Competition Enters Business Stage
The women’s Madrid Open has been a tournament of upsets and underdog runs, and William Hill News tipster Sam Cox previews the semi-finals.
Madrid Open Tips – Semi Finals:
- Hailey Baptiste vs Mirra Andreeva – Both players to win a set (13/8)
- Anastasia Potapova vs Marta Kostyuk – Kostyuk -4.5 games (Evens)
Only one of the top 25 seeds has made into the semis. Aryna Sabalenka was the only one in the top 12 to even reach the quarters. Here are our tennis betting picks for the final four.
Hailey Baptiste vs Mirra Andreeva
Hailey Baptiste came from a set down to beat Sabalenka. That followed wins over Jasmine Paolini and Belinda Bencic. It’s been a real breakout tournament for the American, who looks poised for a strong clay-court season.
Mirra Andreeva has really seen the draw fall in her favour. A quarter-final win over Leylah Fernandez was her first match against a seeded player.
Baptiste lost this matchup at Wimbledon last season, but the American went on a deep run in Miami and is poised to compete hard in this match. This should be an enthralling encounter between two of the world’s stronger clay-court performers.
Anastasia Potapova vs Marta Kostyuk
What a run it’s been from Marta Kostyuk. Jessica Pegula, Katie Boulter, and Linda Nosková have been seen off in emphatic fashion, setting up a semi-final with Anastasia Potapova.
This is the fourth meeting between the players. Kostyuk has won the last two, including a hard-fought victory over Potapova in Madrid 12 months ago. Potapova’s run has been equally as impressive, with wins over Jelena Ostapenko, Elena Rybakina, and Karolína Plíšková.
Kostyuk has the experience advantage at this stage of major competitions, both as a doubles and singles player. Potapova hasn’t even reached the quarter of a WTA 1000 event since Indian Wells in 2024.
As impressive as Potapova’s been, Kostyuk is rightly favoured. The Ukrainian boasts a 10-0 record on clay this season.
