American figure skater and Dancing on Ice champion Alex Murphy has called for the show to bring guest judges on board each week to breathe new life into the series.

The reigning 2020 champion has praised the current judges and presenters on the show but admitted that adding guest personalities each week would be exciting for viewers and contestants alike.

She said: “I feel like the show is quite shook up already but bringing in a weekly guest judge to add to the panel would make things really fun and give it a freshness that would be exciting.

“The existing judges and presenters do such a fantastic job and adding in someone else would give it a different dynamic. It’d be something that other reality TV shows don’t offer too much.”

On the subject of judges, it was down to Jayne Torvill for the casting vote to send Rebekah Vardy home last week, and Alex recognised that it was a tough decision for the skating legend to make.

“I think it’s really hard to be the person that has the final vote,” she admitted. “The vote comes down to the skate-off and who skates the best within it.

“At the end of the day, yes, it is a public vote, but by having a skate-off this tends to keep the highest technical level skater in the show.

“It was a shame to see Rebecca go, but she achieved quite a lot in her time on the show and she can be proud of what she managed to do.”

Colin Jackson and Sonny Jay both received high scores of 37.5 from the judges, and Alex has been impressed with their recent performances.

She said: “I definitely think Colin is coming along. I’d like to see more of a performance from him, and his previous skating experience is now really showing. He is climbing his way to the top of the leaderboard at the right time!

“I love Sonny Jay’s personality and what he brings to the ice too. I also love that he has no experience before this, so he’s a true novice. He reminds me of Joe Swash.”

Faye Brookes, who Alex has previously labelled as an “excellent skater” and is one of the favourites to win this year’s series, has been partnered with Matt Evers.

Alex has admitted this can be tricky to adapt to at a time when the show is reaching its finale.

She said: “Getting a new partner can be tough, but last year it worked out amazing for me and Joe! Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t… I think if Faye keeps focused on the skating then she will do really well.

“At this stage, I can’t pick a winner. Right now, it’s really hard to tell as so many people have dropped out so it’s anyone’s guess. Anyone could go on to win it this year.

“There’s no clear headliner, but that makes for an interesting series, especially heading into the final few weeks!”
