2022 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Guide

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is on the horizon and set to recognise the outstanding British sports performer of 2022.

With many incredible performances from women’s and men’s footballers and cricketers amongst other sports, it will surely be one of Britain’s recent trophy winners that scoops up the award.

We preview the favourites in the betting for the coveted accolade.

Beth Mead

Lionesses hero Beth Mead currently leads the way in the race for the 2022 Sports Personality of the year as the odds-on 2/9 favourite. Mead was always likely to make it onto the list having helped the England Women to a convincing win in the 2022 European Championships. Her six goals and four assists in the tournament, combined with her loveable charm off the pitch, sees her comfortably top the list and likely only moveable by an achievement of equal magnitude.

Harry Kane

Another England footballer and massively popular figure across the UK holds second spot in the betting after another very good year for both Tottenham and England. Scoring 12 goals in the Premier League since the start of the season, Harry Kane looks to have hung onto his incredible goalscoring form and, after a brilliant start to this year’s World Cup, is well in with a chance of claiming the award for the first time. He is 8/1 to win, but expect the odds to shorten with every goal he scores.

Ben Stokes

This time a cricket phenomenon, Ben Stokes has had another outrageous year in both individual achievements and those with the national team. Captaining England’s Test team to one of their most fruitful years and delivering an awe-inspiring performance in the T20 World Cup final, the all-rounder, currently priced at 16/1, could easily win the award – it’s just unfortunate he is in such exceptional company.

Bukayo Saka

Euro 2020 finalist Bukayo Saka has more than bounced back from the heart-breaking events of last year’s Wembley showdown and has performed better than ever for Arsenal. The London-born winger has propelled the north London side to the top of the Premier League, assuming a critical role in a team that has been promising to perform for a number of years. Now reaching his potential, Saka is proving his place in the England World Cup squad and at the time of writing, is the Three Lion’s top scorer at the Qatar World Cup. At 18/1 to win, Bukayo is well in a with a chance and will almost certainly be back on this list in the years to come.

Marcus Rashford

Surprisingly yet to win the award, Marcus Rashford has rediscovered his electric form for both club and country and continues to inspire off the pitch with his charitable projects. The striker continues to perform well when he has been called upon by Gareth Southgate in Qatar and proves to be one of the shining lights at Manchester United in a time of turmoil and transition. Rashford is 18/1 to claim the award, and looking at his recent performances for England, those odds could be shortening in the near future.
