Lam announces PNG squad for World Cup

Former Wigan Warrior and now Papua New Guinea coach, Adrian Lam, has announced his squad for the Rugby League World Cup which starts next week in Australia. Among the 24-man squad are 11 overseas-based players including the Salford City Reds centre, John Wilshere, who has been named as captain. Hull KR supply the rest of the Super League representation with the ageless Stanley Gene and Makali Aizue.

PNG are 150/1 outsiders to win the tournament in William Hill's Rugby League World Cup betting odds and have to overcome the three favourites in the betting, Australia (2/9 to win the Cup), England (11/2) and New Zealand (6/1) in Pool A to progress to the semi-final stage of the World Cup yet Lam isn't worrying about his formidable opposition. "We have a plan in place for them, and I know the boys will play to that plan," he said following his squad announcement which was delayed to allow him to travel from Sydney to watch a final trials game in PNG.
