Big guns fail to shine in the Gold Cup
It looked the showdown of Champions, but it would be Irish runner Synchronised who stole the march in National Hunt racing's Blue Riband this afternoon when taking the crowns of Kauto Star and Long Run in an epic Gold Cup encounter.
Punters piled into the top prices of 9-4 and 9-2 available with William Hill this morning, who by off-time, held seven-figure liabilities apiece on the duo of Kauto Star and Long Run.
Early figures suggest that William Hill alone won in excess of £1million on the Gold Cup - which stands only behind the Grand National as the biggest betting race of the year.
Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘'Not often do we roar home an AP McCoy winner, and even rarer do they win us over a million pounds! In one fell swoop AP has guaranteed that in the annual Cheltenham battle; the bookies have bested the punters.''
William Hill have installed Synchronised as their 8-1 joint second-favourite for the 2013 Gold Cup, alongside Long Run. Fellow Irish raider Sir Des Champs who took the Jewson Chase in impressive fashion heads the betting at 6-1.
