Craven meeting preview and a look to the Classics
A big weekend of racing lies ahead of us with the Craven meeting at Newmarket taking place which can give us more of an insight as to how the betting will shape for the first Classics of the year.
Here we hope to give you an indication of what's coming up at this exciting meeting and an idea of which horses to look out for in the upcoming season.
On Wednesday trials for both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas take place in the form of the European Free Handicap at 3.35 and the Nell Gwyn Stakes at 4.10.
One everyone will be watching in the 3.35 is Art Connoisseur who won at the Craven meeting last year.
Michael Bell feels that the ground may not be quick enough for his starlet but needs to get a run in to him so a word of caution should be heeded if looking to take the 5/1 available for the race today.
Art Connoisseur is currently 25/1 in the betting for the 2000 Guineas and the price will contract significantly if he puts in a big run.
Another to look out for are Jeremy Noseda's Awinnersgame who looks fairly weighted as he gets his season started as 4/1 favourite for the 3.35 and 50/1 for the 2000 Guineas. Bryan Smart's Courageous also holds a Guineas entry and is priced currently at 66/1.
Snoqualmie Girl and Rose Diamond hold entries in the 1000 Guineas both at 50/1 and Penny's Gift who is trained by Richard Hannon who does so well in these trial races, can be backed at 40/1 for the 1000 Guineas.
In the Nell Gwyn Stakes at 4.10 we get to see some of the potential star fillies on show, which includes one of the most exciting fillies, Fantasia.
Frankie Dettori takes the ride on Luca Cumani's star and is firm favourite to take this trial at around 8/11.
Fantasia can be backed currently at 10/1 for both the 1000 Guineas and the Juddmonte Oaks, although recent speculation suggests Cumani may send here to France to race in the French version of the Guineas.
Other runners to look out for in this exciting trial include the well backed Wajaha who has been supported in to 7/2 for the Nell Gwyn and a big run would see her price of 33/1 for the Guineas get slashed.
Summer Fete and Damaniyat Girl are also both 33/1 for the Newmarket Classic while Dunes Queen is in there at odds of 50/1.
Finally on Wednesday, in the 4.45 it could be worth keeping an eye on Aiden O'Brien's Drumbeat. He is priced at 10/3 to take the prize today and at 33/1 for the Derby, this multiple Group 1 entrant could be something special.
Highlights to look forward to later in the week include the Craven Stakes at 3.35 on Thursday. This is a trial for colts and geldings over seven furlongs which has notable entrants in the shape of Delegator who can be backed at 8/1 for the 2000 Guineas and Sir Michael Stoute's Glass Harmonium who is 25/1.
A host of other entries like Alyarf and Close Alliance all go for the Craven and are all 40/1 or bigger for the Newmarket showpiece.
This really should be a remarkable couple of days and give us a peek at who are the potential stars this season.
We are yet to see 9/2 ante-post favourite Mastercraftsman yet this season and with doubts about 8/1 shot Rip Van Winkle's fitness for the Guineas and with 7/1 second favourite Naqoos getting beaten in the Prix Djebel, the betting is starting to become wider open.
