Major sporting events in July

| BY News Team

It’s been a busy summer of sport so far, and it’s no different as we enter July. The calendar for sport is brimming, with high quality action continuing and getting underway, our list looks at the major sporting events that you’ve got to look forward to this month.

Euro 2024

Euro 2024 has already begun but is now entering the knockout stages before concluding on July 14th. England are 7/2 favourites, after booking their place in the quarter-finals following an extra-time victory over Slovakia. Spain and France are next in at 4/1 with Germany 9/2 and Portugal 7/1, England are rightfully favourites due to being on a far easier side of the draw despite nearly being knocked out in the Round of 16, whereas Germany, Spain, France and Portugal are all fighting it out for their place in the final on the other side.

Wimbledon

Wimbledon kicked off on 1st July and will run for two weeks before concluding on the 14th and this looks to be a very competitive year. Jannik Sinner is the 7/4 favourite for the Gentlemen’s Singles, after a dominant year across the ATP tour scooping six titles, helping Italy towards winning their first Davis Cup and breaking his Grand Slam duck winning the Australian Open. It has been the first time since 2003 that we have seen someone other than Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz go off favourite for a Major tennis tournament, but it’s difficult to argue with it after the year that the Italian has had.

Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz is 9/4 second favourite, the Spaniard is already through to the second round after coasting to a 3-0 victory in Round One. Alcaraz was the long-term favourite for Wimbledon until a shock defeat to Jack Draper at Queen’s, a tournament Alcaraz was also reigning champion of. You can have questions over his form entering the tournament, but if he is at his best he still has a serious chance this year.

Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic is next at 5/2, and you can’t write off the Serbian who’s a Wimbledon title off equalling the most championships ever won. There are injury concerns for Novak who’s had a patchy year by his standards, but you’d be surprised if he wasn’t to go deep this year.

For the Ladies’, there are joint favourites in Iga Swatek and Coco Gauff at 7/2. There is no doubting that Swiatek comes into the competition in the best form having won her last 19 games on the bounce, however she is yet to prove that she can back her level on clay up on grass, having never won a WTA title before on the surface. If she can transfer that level of form to the Wimbledon track here then she has a massive chance.

British Grand Prix

The next stop in the F1 season is at Silverstone and it looks to be a cracker. Max Verstappen is 4/6 market leader for the race, but many of those chasing him are closing the gap and we could see a different face top the podium come Sunday. The recent Austrian Grand Prix was won by George Russell of Mercedes, showing the resurgence of the Mercedes in recent weeks with two British drivers who will be desperate to win at their home GP. Lando Norris was in the process of completing an overtake on Verstappen at Austria before the two collided, both suffering a puncture in the process, but it shows the speed that Lando currently has and he can be backed at 9/4 to win his home Grand Prix.
