Assessing The Main Contenders For The Formula One Constructors Championship Title

The F1 betting markets make McLaren the favourites to win the Constructors Championship in 2025 at Evens. Ferrari – with Lewis Hamilton joining Charles Leclerc to form the grid’s best driver pairing – trail closely behind at 5/4.
A lack of faith in Liam Lawson leaves Red Bull Racing out at 5/1 ahead of Mercedes (12/1) and Aston Martin (50/1). Williams are the only other team shorter than 500/1, with Alpine, the Racing Bulls, Haas, and Sauber unlikely to make many Q3 appearances.
McLaren Go Back-To-Back
The 2024 season brought McLaren’s first Constructors’ Title since 1998. They haven’t won consecutive Constructors Championships since winning four in a row between 1988 and 1991 when Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Gerhard Berger were their drivers.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri enjoyed themselves in preseason testing. The papaya car is once again the fastest on the grid, excelling in short and long runs.
The car isn’t faultless, but it’s not far from it. Internal conflict and trying to give both drivers a shot at the title could get in the way of a second Constructors’ Championship in two years, though everyone seemed to be singing from the same hymn sheet in Bahrain.
The question will only really be answered when there are major strategy decisions that could benefit one of the drivers. With the fastest car and two reliable drivers, McLaren should win the title, even if the vast majority of fans would rather have Ferrari’s driver lineup.
Ferrari’s Long Wait
Ferrari haven’t won the Constructors’ Championship since 2008. This is the Scuderia’s longest gap between team titles ever. The sport’s most iconic team has responded to this drought by making perhaps the most high-profile driver signing in F1 history to pair a seven-time world champion with Charles Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton might have celebrated his 40th birthday last month, but the Brit is still an elite driver. He had a pair of race wins last season and enters this year tied with Leclerc for the third-shortest online betting odds to win the Drivers Championship.
Ferrari have had a knack for tripping themselves up in recent years. Fred Vasseur seems like the right kind of personality to manage this new situation, and the Prancing Horse might have their strategic decisions made for them.
They could end up in a situation like McLaren did last year where it becomes clearly team-first with Norris or Piastri cruising to the title.
From a betting perspective, Ferrari are a good option at 5/4. The consistency and pace of Hamilton and Leclerc gives them a great chance.
The Newey Effect
Adrian Newey’s arrival isn’t going to make Aston Martin into a race-winning team at the start of the season – particularly as the genius ‘managing technical partner’ didn’t start work until March 1.
Newey’s departure weakens a Red Bull team that was overtaken by McLaren during the 2024 season. Red Bull had a tumultuous few days of testing in Bahrain, and they took a risk giving Liam Lawson the second seat.
Max Verstappen will inevitably win some races, but as we saw last year, Christian Horner’s team need two podium-hunting cars to win the Constructors’ Championship.
Lawson isn’t going to consistently beat Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris, Piastri, and George Russell in what might be the fourth-fastest car.
Newey won’t make Aston Martin into a title contender immediately. Instead, his focus should be on evolving the car ahead of the new set of regulations in 2026.
Aston Martin, led by ambitious owner Lawrence Stroll, are going to want to see some progress in 2025, so don’t be surprised to see the Silverstone-based team fighting for podium places and having an impact on the Constructors Championship.
