Ascot Stakes History
The Ascot Stakes is a prestigious heritage handicap race held annually on the opening day of Royal Ascot. In 2024, it took place on Tuesday 18th June and the race is open to horses aged four and older and covers a distance of 2 miles, 3 furlongs, and 210 yards (approximately 3,810 meters) on turf.
It is renowned for its demanding stamina test, making it a prime target for National Hunt trainers transitioning horses to flat racing.
The 2024 edition saw Pledgeofallegiance, trained by Sir Mark Prescott and ridden by Luke Morris, secure victory at odds of 20/1. The horse, a 4-year-old gelding, demonstrated resilience and tactical acumen, holding off a strong challenge from Divine Comedy to win by half a length.
This triumph marked Prescott’s first Royal Ascot win since 1996, highlighting the race’s significance in the Royal Ascot calendar.
The Ascot Stakes continues to be a highlight of Royal Ascot, attracting a diverse field of stayers and showcasing the versatility and endurance of thoroughbred racing.
