Wolferton Stakes History

The Wolferton Stakes is a Listed flat race held annually on the opening day of Royal Ascot. In 2024, it took place on 18th June and the race covers a distance of 1 mile, 1 furlong, and 212 yards (approximately 2,004 meters) on turf.

Open to horses aged four and older, the race has become a key event for middle-distance horses aiming to progress to higher-class races. Notable past winners include Group race performers such as Imperial Stride (2005), Gatewood (2012), Contributor (2014), Mahsoob (2015), and Addeybb (2019).

The 2024 edition saw Israr, trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by Jim Crowley, secure victory as the 11/4 favourite. Israr made a smooth headway over 2 furlongs out, took the lead, and went clear approaching the final furlong, winning decisively.

The Wolferton Stakes continues to serve as a significant stepping stone for horses progressing through the ranks, often leading to participation in Group-level races.
