A dramatic win at the Home of Cricket was inspired by England’s bowling heroics after their batters set what looked like a below par target.
The nine-day gap between Tests gives England time to recover, with Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer in particular need of recuperation.
India’s Selection
India are surely going to keep Jasprit Bumrah in the side given that he will have over a week to rest.
The tourists had a much better balance to their side at Lord’s with Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep joining Bumrah in the seam department, and Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja proving effective as a spin tandem.
Kuldeep Yadav still looms, however, and news over his potential selection is worth following for anyone eyeing up the top bowler betting markets.
Karun Nair’s position could be under threat. He has scores of 0, 20, 31, 26, 40, and 14 so far in this series. The 14 came when India needed to survive to the close on day four and he bizarrely left a straight one. Sai Sudharsan could get another chance at number three.
Dhruv Jurel substituted for Rishabh Pant behind the stumps after the latter suffered a finger injury. Shubman Gill expects Pant to be available at Old Trafford, but one wonders if he will be fit to keep.
KL Rahul could take the gloves if Pant has to play as a specialist batter – though the chances of him scoring six sixes in an over is very unlikely.
Archer Stays
Archer is keen to play the two remaining Test matches if allowed. He was an immediate difference-maker at Lord’s, taking a wicket with his third ball and bowling a match-winning spell on the fifth morning.
With the break before the teams head to Manchester, it makes sense for Archer to play this match and then see how he pulls up before the Fifth Test.
Gus Atkinson is likely to return to the side, and Liam Dawson has been recalled to the squad after Shoaib Bashir was ruled out of the rest of the series with a broken little finger.
Dawson’s arrival – a legitimate top-six batter in county cricket – makes it easier for England to leave out Chris Woakes, who was bordering on being a new-ball specialist at Lord’s. Dawson, Atkinson, and Brydon Carse provide more than enough lower-order batting.
Despite further questions about Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope’s places, there are no indications that England are ready to move on from either player.
England Complete Series Win
England’s bowling attack should only get stronger. India have missed two golden opportunities to win Test matches in this series, and that will cost them the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.
Old Trafford has been a good place to bat in red-ball cricket this summer. There have been five 400+ scores.
The needle which arrived on the third evening at Lord’s works to England’s advantage. Gill, and a couple of other Indian batters, didn’t seem to fancy it in the final innings with England fired up.
England smashed Australia all over Old Trafford a couple of summers ago. This batting lineup is due a five-per-over day on a flat one. Look for the shrewd caution of Lord’s to be put in the past.
