Welsh Grand National: Runner-By-Runner Guide & Predictions (2025)
The biggest race day of the year in Wales, the £150,000 Welsh Grand National is scheduled to take place on December 27th every year.
Last year’s winner was Val Dancer, trained by Mel Rowley and ridden by Charlie Hammond. Here is your runner-by-runner guide to this year’s race:
Intense Raffles
A former Irish Grand National winner and a top-class horse, but he appears to be anchored to hilt in this contest off top-weight.
Haiti Couleurs
Won the Irish Grand National back in April, following up on his success at the Cheltenham Festival. Needs to bounce right back from a poor Betfair Chase run.
Mr Vango
He’s a proven topclass marathon stayer and has leading claims given his Midlands Grand National heroics. Just denied in the Becher Chase three weeks ago and will be a popular pick in our sports betting.
Nassalam
Won this race by 34 lengths in 2023 but has been regressive ever since. Hard to recommend at present.
Monbeg Genius
Has placed form in some of the best staying chases across the land and could well grab a podium spot at his best.
Rock My Way
Comfortably claimed the Berkshire National last month and is a seven-year-old on the up. His fifth in the Scottish Grand National at Ayr brings him right into the equation.
Tanganyika
Appears to be heading in the wrong direction in terms of form this season. A risky bet for sure.
Uncle Bert
Led most of the way over the 2m4f Mildmay course at Aintree but there must be doubts about his stamina holding out here.
O’Connell
Won the recent London National and hails from an extremely in-form stable at the moment. Has a leading chance.
Collectors Item
Finishing second in last year’s race is a major plus and returns under a lower weight.
Git Maker
Ran a cracker in both the Kim Muir and Scottish National in 2024 and a major case can be made for him here today.
Deafening Silence
Failed to live with Konfusion in the Rehearsal Chase and this extra distance is off-putting too.
Jubilee Express
Landed the Welsh National Trial at the start of the month and there is every reason to believe he’ll put on a good show in the real thing.
Where It All Began
Fourth in the 2024 Kim Muir but his form has gone totally AWOL since.
Livin On Luco
Victorious in the Southern National at Plumpton but this is a whole new level of competition for the seven-year-old.
Dom Of Mary
Went in at Newcastle over this distance a month ago and could well be a dark horse based upon that.
Hung Jury
Successful in the amateurs distance race at Cheltenham’s November meeting, then finished second to O’Connell at Sandown. Does this race come too soon after?
Beaufort Scale
If you get wind of this one secretly being backed in our horse racing betting, can you let me know?
Pats Fancy
Looked an exciting prospect at the start of 2021, but has totally gone the wrong way since.
