Horse Racing Tips: Furthur Defies Odds To Claim Graded Success

York Ebor Festival Day 3

It’s the last day of the York Dante Meeting on Friday with the Yorkshire Cup Stakes (4:05) rounding things off with a high-quality contest and William Hill News have you covered on the action.

This race often features horses with grand designs on the Royal Ascot Gold Cup in June, so it always makes for an enjoyable spectacle.

York Tips Friday:

  • 1.45pm – Spirit Genie
  • 2.20pm – Botagoz
  • 2.55pm – Have Secret
  • 3.30pm – Margaret’s Pearl
  • 4.05pm – Furthur (NAP)
  • 4.40pm – Storm Esme
  • 5.15pm – Portcullis

Our horse racing expert Steven Mullington is here to guide you through the last day of the York finale:

1.45 – 7f Handicap

SPIRIT GENIE originally raced in Ireland under the care of trainer Jessica Harrington before coming over to the Jennie Candlish stable.

Candlish has trained the six-year-old to handicap victories at premier UK tracks such as Chester and Haydock, so a good showing at York should pose him no problems.

2.20 – 1m Fillies’ Stakes

Nurlan Bizakov’s colours are commonplace on the French racecourses, but he only has a limited number of runners in the UK, generally trained by Roger Varian.

BOTAGOZ has already won two races, the most recent of which was a two-length victory at Nottingham on April 18.

This Mehmas-filly looks well overpriced at 12/1 in our horse racing betting.

2.55 – 1m2½f Handicap

HAVE SECRET won with plenty in hand at Pontefract last month and can follow up on the Knavesmire.

A winner of 5 of his 37 starts, the six-year-old absolutely thrives over this distance and has to be included in your calculations.

3.30 – 5f Marygate Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race)

It’s not easy for any horse to win over the stiff five furlongs at Pontefract, but MARGARET’S PEARL did just that at the Yorkshire track 24 days ago.

If she was trained by a much more high profile yard, she would be half her predicted starting price, however Mr Amy Murphy will fly under the radar with many punters/plaudits.

Again, this horse is overpriced and is an interesting each-way play.

4.05 – 1m6f Yorkshire Cup Stakes (Group 2)

A versatile stayer sired by Waldgeist (Arc winner), FURTHUR (NAP) arrives at York with a strong chance of taking home the silverware.

His juvenile achievements include winning the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer before finishing 11th  in the Melbourne Cup in Australia.

Andrew Balding is currently on a 22% strike rate and had a superb Chester May Meeting last week, so hopefully his form will continue through to here.

4.40 – 5f Handicap

STORM ESME won on her racecourse debut at Newcastle, under Sean Kirrane, pulling clear in the last furlong and holding on to score nicely.

She then ran too bad to be true in her first handicap at Ripon a month ago, but I am willing to overlook that and give her a great each-way chance in our sports betting markets.

5.15 – 1m Confined Novice Stakes

The John and Thady Gosden-trained PORTCULLIS (NB) can bring the drawbridge down on another excellent Dante Festival.

This exciting three-year-old Frankel colt, owned by King Charles and Queen Camilla, impressed with a 5.5-length victory on his debut in the Wood Ditton Stakes at Newmarket.

It will take a good one to overturn the favourite in this contest.
