- Following their third World Cup triumph in Qatar in 2022, Argentina arrive in North America aiming to become only the third nation in history to win back‑to‑back titles, joining Italy (1934 & 1938) and Brazil (1958 & 1962).
- There are plenty of positive omens for La Albiceleste. Seven of the last eight World Cups held in the Americas have been won by South American nations, while Lionel Scaloni’s side come into this tournament in excellent form, winning each of their last seven matches and conceding just once in that run.
- Argentina have also enjoyed a dominant record against African opposition on the world stage, winning each of their last six World Cup meetings. Unsurprisingly, they are strong odds‑on favourites with William Hill at 2/5 to begin their title defence with a victory.
- Algeria head to North America after topping their qualification group for the second successive campaign, arriving in strong form with seven wins from their last nine matches in all competitions. However, the Fennecs have struggled historically on the world stage, winning just three of their last thirteen World Cup fixtures.
- Vladimir Petković’s side could hardly have been handed a tougher start as they open against the reigning champions, but the Desert Warriors will still believe they can progress from the group stage for only the second time in their history.
- With a couple of early shocks already lighting up the 2026 World Cup, Algeria may take encouragement from the unpredictability of the opening round. Those expecting another upset can back the Fennecs at 7/1 with William Hill to stun Messi and co.
