2026 World Cup Format Explained: 48 Teams, 12 Groups, 104 Matches

| BY News Team

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams, 12 groups of four, 104 matches and a new round of 32, replacing the old 32-team format used from 1998 through 2022.

It will also be the first men’s World Cup hosted by three countries: the USA, Canada and Mexico.

How many teams are in the 2026 World Cup?

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in the competition’s history, expanding from 32 teams to 48. That increase means 16 more nations will take part than at Qatar 2022, giving more confederations representation and making qualification more accessible across the globe.

Rather than using the previously discussed idea of 16 groups of three, FIFA confirmed that the final format will be 12 groups of four teams. Each nation will still be guaranteed three group-stage matches, which preserves the familiar rhythm of past World Cups.

How does the group stage work?

The 48 teams will be split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays the other three sides in its group once, meaning every nation gets three group matches before the knockout phase.

The top two teams in each group will qualify automatically for the knockout rounds. They will be joined by the eight best third-placed teams, meaning 32 teams in total advance from the group stage.

That “best third-placed teams” rule is one of the biggest new features of the 2026 format. It means finishing third will not automatically eliminate a team, and it should keep more nations alive heading into the final round of group fixtures.

What is the new knockout format?

Because 32 teams now progress beyond the groups, the knockout stage starts with a round of 32 instead of a round of 16. From there, the tournament follows a straight knockout path: round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off and final.

As in previous World Cups, knockout matches level after 90 minutes will go to extra time and then, if required, a penalty shootout. So while the field is bigger, the basic win-or-go-home drama of the latter rounds remains unchanged.

How many matches will be played?

The expanded format increases the total number of games from 64 to 104. Of those, 72 will come in the group stage, with the remaining 32 taking place in the knockout rounds.

That also means the tournament will run longer than recent editions. FIFA says the 2026 World Cup will last 39 days, making it a longer festival of football than the 32-team versions fans have become used to.

Why did FIFA change the format?

FIFA’s changes are designed to make the World Cup bigger, more inclusive and commercially stronger, while also preserving the minimum three-game guarantee for every team.

Moving to 12 groups of four avoids some of the concerns around three-team groups, such as teams knowing exactly what result they need in the final match and the risk of less competitive final group games.

For fans, the updated structure means more matches, more nations, more knockout ties and more chances for underdogs to stay alive.

For betting customers, it also creates a more layered tournament, with added markets around third-place qualification, round-of-32 ties and a longer route to the final than ever before.
