Count Binface 4/1 to clean up in Clacton by-election

| BY News Team

Politics and betting have always made for an intriguing mix, but the latest market on the upcoming Clacton by-election might just be one of the most unusual we’ve ever seen.

After Nigel Farage announced he would resign as MP before immediately seeking re-election, Britain’s major political parties opted not to field candidates, transforming what looked like a routine political contest into one of the strangest betting heats of the year. That decision has had an immediate impact on the odds.

Count Binface – the satirical candidate famous for his silver bin-shaped helmet and tongue-in-cheek manifestos – has seen his price slashed. With Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens all sitting this one out, Binface has emerged as the clearest challenger on the ballot paper.

William Hill now makes Count Binface a 4/1 chance to pull off one of the biggest political shocks in recent memory, a dramatic move from much bigger prices before the major parties confirmed they would boycott the contest.

Of course, despite the market movement, Nigel Farage remains the overwhelming favourite to retain the seat.

Reform UK continue to dominate the betting, with the party heavily odds-on to win in Clacton after Farage framed the by-election as a “people versus the establishment” contest amid ongoing scrutiny over his financial affairs.

While the betting still suggests an upset would require a remarkable turn of events, the market has certainly become far more competitive than anyone might have expected when the by-election was first announced.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “With several major parties choosing not to contest in Clacton, our by-election market has taken a dramatic turn – and Count Binface has wheeled himself into contention as the 4/1 second-favourite.

“While Reform remain the big 1/6 favourites, Binface could find himself with a path to victory if voters feel like he can clean up Clacton on polling day.”
