Form man Arthur Gea is coming off three straight wins over seeded players, including Ben Shelton in the third round and Jakub Menšík in the fourth. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina saw off Frances Tiafoe earlier in the competition to progress from the fourth section.

This is the first meeting between Gea and Fokina. Fokina is aiming to reach a Masters semi-final for only the fourth time. Gea is in the midst of a breakout – it’s the first time he’s even reached the first round of a Masters event after winning the Los Cabos Open and reaching the fourth round at the US Open.

It’s the 13th meeting between the two players, with de Minaur coming out on top in their last two duels (both of which were in the Laver Cup).
