League Two
Grimsby set to leapfrog Swindon into play-off spot
Saturday’s League Two card serves up another pivotal round of fixtures at both ends of the table; here are William Hill News’ predictions.
With just two games left, the form lines and pressure levels on the attached table tell you almost as much as the raw points.
League Two predictions – Saturday 25th April:
Grimsby 2-1 Swindon
MK Dons 3-0 Tranmere
Accrington 1-1 Crawley
Barnet 2-0 Gillingham
Bristol Rovers 2-2 Cheltenham
Cambridge 2-0 Barrow
Chesterfield 2-1 Crewe
Colchester 1-2 Notts County
Newport 1-1 Oldham
Shrewsbury 1-1 Fleetwood
Walsall 2-1 Harrogate
Grimsby v Swindon – Saturday, 12.30pm
Grimsby – 3/4 | Draw – 13/5 | Swindon – 3/1
Both sides are in the top seven and come in with identical recent sequences of three wins from their last five, but Grimsby’s latest run has been more consistent than Swindon’s. With home advantage and slightly better momentum, the Mariners look likelier to edge what should be a high‑quality contest.
Prediction: Grimsby 2-1 Swindon
MK Dons v Tranmere – Saturday, 12.30pm
MK Dons – 2/5 | Draw – 17/5 | Tranmere – 6/1
MK Dons have won their last two games and sit second, still hunting down Bromley for the title. Tranmere, by contrast, are stuck in 20th with four defeats and a draw in that same span before a recent rare win at Cheltenham. But a focused Dons side should have far too much.
Prediction: MK Dons 3-0 Tranmere
Accrington v Crawley – Saturday, 3pm
Accrington – 21/10 | Draw – 11/5 | Crawley – 6/5
Accrington’s last draw shows they have at least stopped the rot, but one win in six is still relegation‑zone pace. Crawley, meanwhile, sit 21st yet have picked up two wins and a draw in their last six, suggesting they’re scrapping for every point. A tight, nervy affair feels likely, with Accrington’s need for a response perhaps just enough to earn a share of the spoils.
Prediction: Accrington 1-1 Crawley
Barnet v Gillingham – Saturday, 3pm
Barnet – 4/9 | Draw – 17/5 | Gillingham – 5/1
Barnet’s recent surge of five wins in six has dragged them to ninth and right onto the coat‑tails of the play‑off places. Gillingham, 18th, have been wobbling badly with three defeats in six and look like a side limping towards the finish line. Given both form and league position, it’s hard to look past a confident home win.
Prediction: Barnet 2-0 Gillingham
Bristol Rovers v Cheltenham – Saturday, 3pm
Bristol Rovers – 7/10 | Draw – 5/2 | Cheltenham – 10/3
Rovers boast one of the hottest streaks in the division and have shot up to 15th. Cheltenham, in 17th, have quietly put together three wins in five themselves, but lost to Tranmere in their last outing, so this looks more balanced than the table suggests. With both in decent nick and little between them in recent results, a score draw would not surprise.
Prediction: Bristol Rovers 2-2 Cheltenham
Cambridge v Barrow – Saturday, 3pm
Cambridge – 3/10 | Draw – 7/2 | Barrow – 9/1
Third‑placed Cambridge have stuttered a touch but remain one of the division’s most reliable sides. Barrow sit 23rd with just one win in five and have one of the worst goal differences in the league, underlining their relegation worries. This is exactly the kind of fixture Cambridge need to control, and their class should tell.
Prediction: Cambridge 2-0 Barrow
Chesterfield v Crewe – Saturday, 3pm
Chesterfield – 8/13 | Draw – 29/10 | Crewe – 18/5
Chesterfield’s recent record is one of the best in the table and has them firmly in the promotion mix in eighth. Crewe, tenth, have suffered back to back losses and the latest run of results shows momentum has stalled. At home, with four wins from six, the Spireites look well‑set to keep charging.
Prediction: Chesterfield 2-1 Crewe
Colchester v Notts County – Saturday, 3pm
Colchester – 15/8 | Draw – 9/4 | Notts County – 13/10
Colchester’s form is solid if unspectacular, three wins in their last four lifting them into 13th. Notts County, fifth, have been wobblier with back‑to‑back defeats the most recent entries in their form. The market still makes County favourites, but on recent evidence this feels more like a coin‑flip; Colchester’s momentum and home advantage mean they could easily nick it.
Prediction: Colchester 1-2 Notts County
Newport v Oldham – Saturday, 3pm
Newport – 11/8 | Draw – 21/10 | Oldham – 15/8
Newport’s form shows a side that has at least picked up points, while Oldham have only taken a single point from their last four. With both stuck in the lower mid‑table pack and showing mixed results, a share of the spoils feels the most likely outcome.
Prediction: Newport 1-1 Oldham
Shrewsbury v Fleetwood – Saturday, 3pm
Shrewsbury – 21/10 | Draw – 2/1 | Fleetwood – 5/4
Shrewsbury have picked up two wins in their last four but the most recent result was a draw, keeping them above the drop zone. Fleetwood’s form is similarly patchy, but a recent win followed by a draw has them solidly mid-table. With both looking vulnerable at the back and inconsistent overall, it’s easy to imagine them cancelling each other out.
Prediction: Shrewsbury 1-1 Fleetwood
Walsall v Harrogate – Saturday, 3pm
Walsall – 21/20 | Draw – 13/5 | Harrogate – 2/1
Walsall’s recent stretch has been frustrating rather than disastrous, but it has kept them anchored in 12th. Harrogate, bottom, are in far worse shape but did pick up a crucial win at Grimsby. Backed by the home crowd and facing one of the league’s leakiest defence, Walsall should have enough to claim the points.
Prediction: Walsall 2-1 Harrogate
