Teddy Sheringham: Harry Kane must question his Tottenham future

Former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has told William Hill that Harry Kane needs to “ask himself questions” regarding his future at Spurs over the summer.

Sheringham, who himself left Tottenham for Manchester United in 1997, said at the FWA Awards: “Harry has got to ask himself the same questions that I asked myself when I left Tottenham. I wanted to play with the best players in the world, which obviously wasn’t going to be the case at Tottenham.

“He has to ask whether there will there be top players coming to Tottenham, and if they are, is the club going to win anything over the next three or four years that he’s got left at the top? It’s a big time for him, so he’s got to ask these questions to himself and be honest. If it’s going to upset people if he says he’s going to leave, then he’s got to do it. If not, then I’m sure he’ll stay at Tottenham and score the goals that he does.

“He’s at a crossroads in the sense that he’s coming into his prime, and he’s got a big decision to make for the next four years of his life. He needs to properly analyse the situation and assess what he wants.”

‘Outstanding’ Haaland will lead City to Treble, but he can still improve

Sheringham was also asked about Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who finished his debut Premier League season with a record-breaking 36 goals from 35 appearances, and believes the Norwegian forward can still improve his game.

“He’s been absolutely outstanding,” he said. “He’s a machine. I’m not sure what people expected, but for him to finish above Harry Kane – and quite comfortably – means he’s had an outstanding season. I think he can get better – Pep Guardiola will work with him, he’s a natural goalscorer and he’s obviously missed some chances too, so there’s more goals there! I know Pep will try and aim higher with him, and Erling sounds like he’s focused on the job, so yes, I think he can get even better.

“I do think City will win the Treble. Whenever some teams have been close to doing it with a few weeks to go, I’ve always thought, ‘I don’t want them to’, but you look at this Manchester City team and they are just phenomenal. You’ve got to take your hat off to how good they are. If anyone is going to do the same as we did in 1999 when winning the Treble with United, fair dos, they’re a phenomenal team led by a phenomenal manager.

“I think City are more favourites than we were going into the 1999 Champions League final. It was a tough fixture for us against Bayern Munich and could have gone either way, but I can’t see anyone winning the Treble other than City, and I hope they do it in style like they’ve been doing for the rest of the season.”
